GOOD LORD.. IF I FIND ONE MORE THING WEIRD WITH MY TWO GIRLS I MIGHT JUST POP!

DT.. my healing ovarian cyst girl has got a weird scab on her side. It's completely covered in hair which is not loose (whether thats because its stuck to the scab I don't know). The perimeter of the scab is white. The scab is orangey brown.. She doesnt seem to be spending a great deal of time on it but I have seen her cleaning her sides normally and I didnt suspect anything from it.

Fungal? Ringworm? A simple scratch that got infected?

After her op. she got very flakey, as she healed her coat looked much better! no flakes.. but now this thing.. slightly smaller than a 5p piece. I'm seeing the vet tomorrow anyway but just incase I thought I'd see what people here say before I trundle off..

VERY grateful for any ideas x

Hmm ?/ Is there any way you could get a picture? From what you've described, it doesn't sound like ringworm. Could it be a bite or something? Fungal (ringworm) is generally a round bald spot with some flaky skin, so the fact it's scabby with no hair loss I would be more inclined to think it were a bite or a scrape of some sort.

hmmm.. well I saw the vet today for Leeland and she had a look. She pulled at the hair and a clump came off and underneath was red raw skin. She said she thought it was just a scab.. perhaps a few weeks ago she had bitten herself in discomfort from the ovarian cysts or the stitches after the op. She said to leave it until the scab fell off and see what is happening. If it is fungal I don't like the idea of leaving it there!

Do you know if fungal is contageous, especially as the other GP is so sickly?

Fungal/ringworm is contagious yes - to other pigs and to humans.

One of my boys a few years back had a fungal infection - some weeks later my daughter contracted ringworm - which took around 6wks to clear as she spread it other areas of her body :{

If you could post a picture, we might be able to tell if it looks just like a healing wound or if it indeed resembles fungal/ringworm, in which case another trip to the vets would be in order

Fungal generally is more scaly, than scabby and red. Here are some pictures from guinealynx http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html
When my girl had ringworm it wasn't red at all, was just a hairless patch on her leg. The hair didn't come off in big clumps either, it was just 1 or 2 hairs at a time.
If you can, take a picture and we'll have a look and try and clarify for you.

It doesn't sound fungal to me. It sounds like wound that has scabbed over and nothing to worry about. Hope this helps. :)

When my boy had fungal/ringworm it started out as a flakey patch of skin - on the advice of others i applied a cream - the next day he'd scratched at the area causing an open wound that was very red/bloody/inflamed - this is when he was taken straight to the vets for the appropriate treatment.

I would never assume anything when it comes to skin conditions - with fungal/ringworm it will look a lot worse before it looks any better.

If it was a healing wound i wouldn't have thought the hair could be pulled so easily and without causing pain to the pig involved - it doesn't sound like a simple healing wound to me - but then I'm not vet nor am i a health/illness expert.

If it were me/my pig i would certainly book another appointment at the vets.....
