About a month ago I noticed Finny was starting to scratch subsequently since then he has been treated 3x with xeno. Wednesday was the final treatment but he continued to scratch finally breaking through the skin. I took him to the vets today and had a rather unimpressive consult. She wasn't sure what it could be but did have a look at a sample under the microscope and couldn't see any mites so she opted for fungal. Looking at the pictures from guinealynx it does look like fungal. She recommended that I continue with metacam and baytril and apply canestan cream to the area (just behind his shoulder/ middle of the back). He is still having a sneaky nibble and scratch of the area and when we touch the area he does squeak with pain Has anybody got any tips of what I can do/use to help him with the itch. Also how long does it take for the cream to start working.? Thanks

My Phoebe was excessively scratching due to mites and was put on a course of steroids which has helped, but that would need to be through a vet. You can give children's Piriton too which can stop scratching, dose is 0.2ml twice a day. Has she got any hair loss? fluoresced skin? is the hair greasy at all? Is their any scurfy skin?

I would recommend a round of baths too, in either Nizoral, Alphosyl or Polytar if it is fungal and possibly Imaverol dips too. Canesten is good but creams can make the skin heat up and make a fungal condition worse.

Thanks for the reply. I'll get some piriton from the chemist tomorrow and I'm presuming the shampoo is the one which is for human use. Any one better than the other? Unfortunately the skin is broken is it still safe to use?

Yes it is the human one, don't tell them it is for a pig or they won't sell it, patch test first behind the ear for 48 hours. I would go for Alphosyl as it is gentler. I am not sure about the broken skin, maybe leave the baths a few days until the skin has improved a bit?

I've been following the excellent advise given - thanks again and the wound has all but closed up. Finny had a check-up on Friday as well as his last dose of baytril. He's still on the daktarin as well as piriton. I know the daktarin is to be continued for 10 days once everything is cleared but how long can I continue to give him the piriton? Thanks

Great news. I think it can be given for as long as it is needed.

It may be an idea to do the baths now the wound is healed if you haven't already.

That's good Finny loves the piriton it also makes him hyper. Amazing popcorning after he's had it. The wounds are still slightly pink but my daughter has a 1/2 day on Wednesday so hopefully she will be able to bath him then. Thanks again
