Apart from Trigene (which I don't have :-\) What else will kill any fungal spores lurking in the cage?

If it is a wooden cage, if it were me I'd throw it out.
If it is plastic, I'd wash it in hot soapy water, leave it to dry naturally then buy some Trigene when the shops open.

Can't think of anything else that would help...sorry ::)

I'm a trigene only girl but as Barbara said if plastic very hot soapy water until you can get trigene

:-[ i cant think of anything, scrub down the cage were anti bacterial stuff u can buy from pet stores for hutches and cages and if that dont work, get a new 1?

I think Dettol has anti fungal properties? I use Trigene or Formula H too but I think I have been told in the past that Dettol in hot water is an acceptable emergency measure?

Ok have had a brainstorm :) Now with the hot soapy water idea, what if the soap bubbles came from Vetsect shampoo or Nizarol shampoo? if they help fungal on the piggys might it also work on the cage?

Does the guinea pig have to go back in this cage Bev?

Personally, I always dump wooden cages that have held a guinea pig suffering from fungal infection, as again personally, I'm not convinced anything is 100% capable of eradicating fungal spores from wood :-\
And...of course, if you don't reinfection is a real possibility.

Others will no doubt disagree...but it's simply my opinion.

If I get guineas in with skin problems, they go into plastic cages until clear. Their original wooden hutch, no matter how new or nice, goes to the tip.
Obviously if buying new accommodation is out of the question, then you'll just have to do your best, and that is probably buying some Trigene, scrubbing out and then leaving it until thoroughly dry. Good luck...

The cage they are in at the mo is plastic, they used to have a nice home built open top wooden one till we got the dog! So thorough cleaning should be possibe, agree that on wood it would be quite hard.

For wooden cages instead of throwing (bit of a land fill-a-phobic here!), could the inside be painted?

:) Virkon, Comficlean and I think Formula H (though I haven't tried FH). Comficlean and Virkon were used by the RSPCA in the Foot and Mouth crisis too. Both available from www.sphsupplies.co.uk Try varnishing your cage with yacht varnish if a new one is out of the question- taking obvious precautions before putting piggy back. ;)
