Hi

So I recently took my two boys that live next to each other to the vet as I noticed they were biting at their back ends a lot and were becoming more irritated when I picked them up.

There wasn’t any hair loss or anything obvious on the skin, I noted some slight white flakes of what looked like dandruff on the skin. The vet looked through and couldn’t see anything or anything to tape to look under microscope. As a precaution they treated for mites, they’ve had their 3 injection Course of Invermectin, which completed last week and obviously they’re cages have been disinfected.

Today I picked Geoff up and had a look at his skin and I noticed that on his rump, on his sweat gland area and just above, there’s lots of crusty yellow dandruff like flakes on his skin, his fur is coming out with clumps of skin on when manipulated, from this area and he became quite agitated when I touched that area, so I wasn’t able to get pics. There’s no other signs anywhere else, I’ve checked ears, nose, feet and rest of skin, it’s literally just on his rump.

He’s otherwise happy and eating well.

I’ve booked him back in with vet tomorrow, do we think it could be fungal? Might try a fungal treatment next to see if that helps.

thanks!

Hi!

Please check against the grease gland pictures in our boar care guide, which you may find helpful anyway.
Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

Posting a picture of the problem and showing clearly where it is located on the body will help us greatly. Right now we are just guessing. If in any doubt, please see a vet for a hands-on examination.

Update: took him to vets this evening, she thinks it’s an infection flare up, not typical of fungal, the skin looks angry but not broken open or bleeding, he’s on abx and an ointment, which is commonly used... lets just say the front end is easier to administer... he’s one feisty Guinea pig!

Try to assert your authority piggy style with lots of love and fussing afterwards. It should get easier once he realises that the fussing on the sore skin is about easing the soreness. ;)

Here are our piggy whispering tips: Who is the boss - your guinea pig or you?

Update:

so I’m on day 4 of applying Isaderm gel to his back area and abx. He was less irritated when I did it and not been itching that area

I’m just concerned about the area of crusty looking dandruff.. I’ve managed to get some pics to put on. The area is greasy as you’ll see, the thicker yellow stuff is right on the greasy area but above there’s more dry looking flakes and I’m worried about mange mites but I can’t see it anywhere else on his skin and he’s had 2 full courses of the Invermectin injection now, so I just don’t know if it’s that. The vet thinks it’s an infection.

see what people think, if anyone has seen this before or has some more ideas.. happy to hear them!
