Hello there :)
I don't know if you can help, but here goes anyway...
I'm currently doing my RHA exams and have reached a question I need a little help with. I've spoken to my trainer, and she says using books/internet etc is fine as the tests are more about being able to find the answers than knowing them all off by heart.
The case study I am at concerns 5 piggies who live in large, wooden cages above a stable tack room. The pigs have fungal infections of the skin, and I need to find out what test could be done to confirm it is fungal.
I've written about a fungal culture and using a Wood lamp with UV. The next question is 'what question do I need to ask the owner before the test is done' and for an alternative test if the client thinks the others are a waste of time.
I'm totally stumped here, and can't seem to find what I'm looking for online. Can you help?
Thanks in advance,
Amy xx

perhaps have you got the money to pay before you get the results lol :rtm::lol!: sorry about that

Ahahaha :D That made me laugh! Yeah, I was thinking about the tack room thing too... I'm imagining piggies in our pony's tack room but I just cant get my brain around what it could be :hb:

Doesn't seem to make sense to me either. Also most types of fungal don't show up in any tests, only Ringworm. I thought the RHA knew that. In answer to what to ask the owner, how about permissoon to do the tests, plus a full medical history of the pigs and if they have been near any other infected animals.

Assuming there are horses/ponies around you could ask if they are suffering from similar symptoms? Ringworm could be passed on from the horses to the piggies, even if they have not been in direct contact via tack/rugs etc or even people handling horses and then handling piggies. Also, do you need to ask the owners permission before performing the tests? Also with fungal infections doesn't the hair come out easily with flakes of skin attached the root. Don't know if this is of any hep!

Good ideas :D Thanks so much for your replies :) I'm going to complete the paper and send it off to see what my trainer thinks :) Thanks again :D
