Funny squeaking sound.

Hi
One of my little girlies tonight I have noticed that she is making a squeaking sound each time she breath in and out. She seems to have been a little bit quite for a couple of days.Nothing too obvious. Still eating and drinking fine.
Any advice would be helpful please.
 
You mention that she is squeaking whilst breathing - is she doing anything else at all at the same time? Could she be going to the toilet or anything when she makes the sound? I have never heard of piggys squeaking whilst breathing so can't be of any help, sorry!

Even though she is eating and drinking, if she doesn't seem herself, it might be a good idea just to get your vet to give her a quick check over.
 
It's a high pitched sound coming from her nose when she breathes. (whiisting) It's hard to describe the sound sorry, but it's coming from the nose, not a noise that she is making herself.

mm am no expert but I would get this checked out, any wheezing etc has to be a little suspect surely.
 
Wonder if she has something lodged in her nose ?

I had a pig once get a hay seed lodged in there, could just see it poking out ! I would have a good nose (sorry no pun intended) just in case same has happened ?

Have been to the vet today. The vet can not find anything wrong.But I know she is not herself cann't put my finger on it yet. Will see how she goes over the next couple of day. If no change will be back to the vets.

Was not at all happy with her to day there is something not right. So went back to the vets today saw a differant vet who I have seen lot's of times before. She found that poor Patch has enlarged kidneys, so now Patch is on antibiotics, and just have to see how she goes. Back on Monday if not before ( if worried.) She is resting in my spear room for tonight.
 
Patch seems tonight a little happier and has started to eat by herself, all be it Small la amount.still syringe feeding her for a little while longer needs to put back some weight she has lost. :)
 
aww hope she gets better :) how could the vet miss enlarged kidneys?

The squeeking while breathing noise could be because the lungs are congested with fluid.When the kidneys are not functioning properly,excess waste fluid can build up in the soft tissues. The piggy needs to be given Frusimide and include a lot of diuretic veg in her diet.Parsley and dandelion are good,and to an extent,celery . Mary

Patch has been eating lots of dandelions from the garden today. So fingers crossed.

Mary or anyone that might know Patch has the runs now, would it be because of the antibiotics she is on?

If patch has been eating a lot of dandelions it could be these causing the diarrheoa.They have laxative as well as diuretic properties.Try giving her celery and parsley instead.,as you say,it could also be the antibiotic causing the problem.Are you giving her a probiotic?,.Frusimide is a diuretic.It is a human drug but only available on prescription.You could get it from your vet.There are over the counter diuretic preperations,but as you are not sure whether Patch has a uri or has fluid on the lung,it may be best to speak to your vet first.Is Patch passing normal amounts of urine?.,does she look puffy round the tummy at all,?.Is the diarrheoa profuse and what colour is it.?.Sorry about all the questions but it is difficult to diagnose without seeing the piggy.,and I do not want to go against a vet who has examined Patch.If the diarrheoa is mustard colour and very profuse it could be kidney failure,but5 as Patch is running around and eating ,this is unlikely. Patches poos are normal colouring but runny, not passing many as she is not eating that much. I have put probiotic in the food I have been syringing her but is not enjoying this very much(nor am I) Would it be better to put it into her water as she seems to be drinking OK.Wee seems OK too.She very quite, but when I get her out of her cage she will have a little run around. She is still indoor in the warm.Patch only weighs 1lb 7 1/4oz now she was 2lb 3/4oz.
Have now been giving her parsley and some coriander.Have got a bay of watercress,spinach and wild rocket salad. Would this be OK to give her,looking for lots of goodies to encourage her to eat.

Carole, Yes,you could put the probiotic in the water,or give it by syringe.The foods you mention are very good,but I would hold back on the spinach untill the pellets are normal.What probiotic are you using?, and what syringe food are you using?.I normally put some pureed veg or fruit into the mix as it gives it more flavour.Piggies do vary when they have to be syringe fed,some,like your piggy,hate it and will push the syringe away,others will actually grab the syringe. The probiotic is called Bio-Lapis(protexin) is this ok?.Her feed is Critical Care.How much of this should she be having.

Carole,Bio-lapis is fine,you can give it for up to 5 days.,.I tend not to give Critical Care by itself unless the piggy is not eating at all,and then I only use it by itself for 2 days.What I do is grind some of the normal dry mix you use into a fine powder,mix with warm water to a thick soup consistancy,or whatever will go into the syringe.I mix in approx.2 teaspoons of Critical Care and some pureed veg or fruit.Pureed carrot seems to be a favouite,but you just have to experiment and find something acceptable to the particular piggy.Some of them like banana. 6g of Critical Care per 100g of body weight in 24 hours is what is recommended on Guinea Lynx. Critical care is designed to be a complete handfeeding solution for when piggies are not eating - continue to offer dry food and veggies alongside. See http://www.guinealynx.com/handfeeding.html.

It is very likely that, depending on the antibiotic, that this could be the cause of the diarrhoea. Some piggies are very intolerant of the antibiotic Baytril which is commonly prescribed by vets. Make sure you are giving the probiotic an hour or two after the antibiotic as to give the two at the same time renders the probiotic useless.

The diarrhoea has seemed to of stopped. She is eating my herself but very small amounts.(not enough to keep her going I feel) I have syringed the probiotic to her today with water, and she has taken 50ml of water.(hope this is not to much ) as she was more then happy to take this.I'm not seeing any poo's which is worrying me and today although she seems a bit brighter has the wheezing sound back,it seems to come from her noise. (noise is clear of fluids) Going back to the vets tomorrow, hoping for some good news.

Went back to the vets yesterday patch,s kidneys seemed to of gone down, but still very tender when the vet pressed on them. Patch is holding her own. Syringe feeding her thoughout the day/night I'm cream crackered. xx0 Just have to get plenty of food inside her to get her body moving. Still no proper poos yet.Everything all crossed for my baby.

Patch seems to be a little better, but not out of the woods as yet still a way to go. But going the right way.

Guinea Pig Breathing

Hi,

I was wondering whether to get my guinea pig checked out too, he seems to have the same problem and is again eating and drinking fine. Is it urgent and needs to be seen to or can the problem go away on its own?

I would definatly get this checked by a vet, guinea pigs can go down hill very quickly when they are poorly :(
 
Okay thank you, yeah that happened with my other guinea pig who sadly passed away last year :( he also seems to be jumping around a lot whenever I get him out, would this be a sign of swollen kidneys?
