My guineapigs(both)have brown things wriggling around in their fur and solo has a sore patch on his back where he has scratched and a lot of flakey skin next to it.The supposable lice are not everywhere and they have never had them before. They are outdoor piggies so we think it is the cause of a mouse or rat.we are going to head to the vets for treatment and have looked online already but I always have good advice on here.

Thank you,Amelie

Hi! It rather sounds like lice (there is only one kind that can survive on guinea pigs for any length of time, and it is the only parasite visible to the naked eye); the live off the blood in the skin of guinea pigs.

Your vet will prescribe an ivermectin product. Please contact them if the lice are not gone within days after the second application or if they return. Some strains can be more resistant and may need a two-pronged approach of ivermectin and a medicated shampoo. Hopefully you've got one of the easier strains. Please keep in mind that you always need to wait at least 48 hours in between any skin applications to allow the active ingredients to be full absorbed.

All the best!

:agr: with Wiebke. Good luck at the vets and getting the best treatment for these pesky parasites.

Thanks guys been to the vets and both of the have been given treatment(spot on) for there Fur mites. The vet said that I caught the little rascals quite early and quickly😀;she also said normally they can see lots of patches where they have been itching alot so it is good I only had one.xx

Pleased you caught the outbreak quickly! Mites are a right pain to clear. When mine had mites at the end of the treatment, I gave the hutch an even more thorough clean than I normally do using up nearly 500ml of F10! I probably went over the top but I wanted to make sure the little blighters weren't going to out in an appearance again!
