We've just gotten our 5th pig Gizmo today having spotted him up for sale online. He is approx 13 weeks old and is fur on his back is quite badly scratched away. We're guessing that he has mites, backed up by the fact that the former owner was selling him because she thought she was allergic to him but I reckon the mites are more likely the cause. He doesn't appear to have been that well looked after as he seems only to have been fed Guinea pig crunch and was kept in a hamster cage!
We've cleaned out his cage and given him fresh bedding and hay etc and will be taking him to the vet for a check up tomorrow. We'd be grateful for advice from anyone else who has dealt with this before, it seems invermectin is the best treatment but not sure if this is prescribed by a vet?

Poor little guy, so glad you have taken him in. It does sound like mites, I rescued a guinea a while ago, and she had been scratching badly and ripped in between her shoulder blades on her back into a sore patch, I treated all my guineas with ivermectin that the vet supplied, and the wound scabbed over and healed,it took around three to four treatments to do the trick 7 days apart.
I would get comfirmation that it is mites from a vet firstly and treat accordingly. In the meantime before you can get to the vet, if you have any micropore tape, you can stick some over the guinea pigs back nails to stop him from scratching and making things worse.
