My six month old piggy rodney seems to have gone off his blackcurrant and oregano excel pellets. He eats very few of these now preferring hay and veg which he wolf's down. He has eaten one of my rabbits excel with mint pellets and enjoyed that. Has anyone else had any experience of a piggy going off a pellet. I am wondering whether to purchase excel with mint guinea pig food in future and try him on that. My other piggy poppy has had blackcurrant excel since she was small and still gobbles it all up.

I have heard of guinea pigs "going off" certain brands of pellets so, it may be worth you introducing another brand .

I notice you have a male and a female guinea pig - are they separate - or is one of them neutered?

They are seperate. They live indoors. Poppy in the kitchen/dining room next to my rabbit (seperate cages) and Rodney in the living room close to them.
He has eaten a few nuggets tonight. I will get the mint ones next time

I went through the same thing with mine, typically just after I bought a large (and rather expensive) bag of the food that they suddenly all refused to eat.

I then switched to a new pellet, which they loved until the manufacturer stopped making it :yikes:

At that point I tried them on two new types and they seem to eat both quite happily, so now I feed a mixture. I am hoping this means if one is unavailable I can always feed the other.
But as long as they have unlimited hay and a good variety of fresh daily, they technically don't need pellets so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thank you swissgreys. I'm not too worried about him as he's not lost weight is lively and very vocal :))

Will try a different flavour. See how he likes that.
Piggys are so greedy you wouldn't think they'd be fussy:P

Do you remove the bowl after a short while assuming he won't eat it, or do you leave it in the cage?
Mine are on the Burgess Excel nuggets with mint and they tend to eat 2 pellets per hour roughly. So I give 20g (2 tablespoons) in the morning, and it's only just finished by the evening, then I give another 20g before bed and it's finished in the morning. But they certainly don't gobble it down like they do with veg etc. It's more a nugget here, a nugget there etc.

I would remove any uneaten fresh veggies after 2 hours if I were you.

It's OK in the only eat a few pellets at a time.

I feed a mixture like Swissgreys.

My two little monsters decided they didn't like Harringtons anymore, so I went a bit crazy and got them some Oxbow. Which they ate for about 3 days, then decided Harringtons is actually okay.

So, they now get a bit of both, so I use up the Oxbow.

Thanks all. The pellets I leave in the cage. He does have a habit of sitting in the bowl tho and occasionally pooping in which case I remove them. My girl poppy gobbles up the pellets and my previous boy GP did as well. Rodders just maybe prefers veg and hay
