Hi

My guinea pig, eva may has a large pea size lump under her chin, you can grab hold of it but it seems attatched inside.

It is not an absess. I had her to the vets last week and she said as it was not causing her any distress and she had not stopped eating or playing, just to leave it and keep an eye on it. She said it may just go away.

Well it's still there, and still not bothering her. Have you any ideas to what it may be?

Lesley

"She said it may just go away"
Let's hope your vet. never has a lump.

Often, not always, a lump in the position you have described is an abscess arising from a problem with one of the lower incisor teeth. Has Eva lost one of those teeth or is one of them lose?
A sebaceous cyst is possible but unlikely. Are there any other lumps, especially in the "armpit" areas?

No all her teeth are there, i haven't felt any other lumps and as i said she doesn't cry in pain. The vet said she wouldn't give her antibiotics are they could give her an upset tummy.

I did google lumps before taking her to vet and i thought it could be a cyst and they could drain it?:(

One of my piggies was prone to cysts which felt very hard like peas but were basically big spots. Best to get professional advice just to be sure.

I had the same with my Bob, about a year ago.A pea sized lump, vet suggested they should operate .He was eating/drinking as norm. Anyway after thought i decided to keep an eye on him for the slightest change in mood/diet/pain etc...nothing .To be honest the thought of him going under an anaesthetic terrified me ! A year on the lump hasnt grown and nothings changed. Eats like a horse ! It was by chance i felt it, so ive no idea how long it's been there,he's 5 1/2 now and very healthy.

So, i dont know....

I would imagine there must a reason it's there. Bob's lump isnt actually attached to anything ...like a bit of round fatty tissue similar to what our old dog has !

That is only my own experience, i cannot speak for anyone else.

I'm suprised the vet said it may just go away though.

Hi Kay

Thay sounds exactly like Eva-May (name after hubby grandmother). So that reassuring.

If it is not hot and painful for her, then I would doubt it was an abscess. An abscess usually causes pain and inflammation as basically it is an infection and the pus builds up.

It could be a cyst that doesn't cause her discomfort, but has it grown in size?

Unfortunately, heat, pain or inflammation are not reliable signs for abscess diagnosis.
Likewise, cysts very rarely cause discomfort.
