Abby'sMom

Abby was 349g NOW IS: 483g up 134g
Molly was 391g NOW IS: 547g up 156g

That was a 7 day weigh in....My girls are growing!

I posted this in the Weigh In section first....but a friend of mine said she thinks that is alot of weight gain for just 7 days.....IDEAS?!?

I just took it to mean they are 'growing up' :<>

That is quite a lot - how much are you feeding?

Every morning, I make sure their pellet bowl has fresh pellets (they never finish the whole bowl...usually about 1/4 of it)
Give them fresh water, drink about 1/4 of it(I'm gone for 12hours)
Give them 1 1/2 cups of Lettuce(various kinds-not iceberg)
Give them 1/2 cup of veggies (1 kind)
THEN: when i get home they get another 1 1/2 Lettuce mixture(dinner)

This is for 2 piggies.

And of course their hay. :)

They sound young, going on their weights, and I don't think you have had them for long, have you? Assuming they are young that weight gain actually sounds reasonable to me. It is high, but if the pigs are fairly new to you and they are still little, it sounds fair. I would be concerned if they gained that much two weeks in a row though. :)
The diet sounds just fine.

The diet sounds spot on.

Yes Yes...And their hay...i top it off every other day...That is if they dont drag it all out and play with it...Their pretty good about just eating it!

Yes, I got Abby 12 July....said she was 2 months(not sure i believe it...i think she was younger) Got Molly on 18 July...said she was 3 months..again...not sure that was true)
Just found out that Molly was saved by a rescue but was w a mixed croud for an unknown amount of time when they picked her up:a19:
I've had them for 3 1/2 weeks

Last 2 weigh ins:

On 7/29:
It has been 10 days since our last weigh in:

Abby was 258g NOW IS: 349g up 91g
Molly was 309g NOW IS: 391g up 82g

On 8/5

Abby was 349g NOW IS: 483g up 134g
Molly was 391g NOW IS: 547g up 156g

they gained more weight in the last 7 days then they did in the previous 10

The amount sounds OK - so you shouldn't be worried about overfeeding them.

You might want to serve a bigger variety of veg eventually, but take it slowly.

Hopefully, their weight gain will stabilise more and they will go on, but at a slower rate. It is quite common that guinea pigs gain weight in a new home; you can feel happy, because they must be settling in well!

QUOTE]
I have a list on the fridge of what they have tried and if they liked it or not.
Come to think of it....they did have a corn cob over the weekend! Loved it!

Mixed crowd you say...could there be a chance she was with any boys...? It is a big weight gain which could very well be perfectly innocent, explained by the fact that they're just eating so much better now they're having something of a growth spurt. And the corn could have a lot to do with it. :))

But now you've mentioned that Molly was in with a mixed group I am thinking there *could* be more to it. Do you know how long the girls were in rescue for before you got them?

She had only been with them 2 weeks in the rescue....yes, 'mixed crowd' was Her term...the rescue lady. that means boys n girls....she said they were all 'young'. After being on here...i know young boys can still do the deed.

Nowhere near long enough for pregnancy watch then...you may find you do some watching yourself. Not what you want to hear I know, but I think it's worth considering the possibility given the circumstances. Any other signs - very thirsty, bulging tummy? Gestation is 10 weeks, at this time Molly would be a minimum of 5 weeks...movement can usually been seen/felt at 6 weeks so I would expect, if she were pregnant, for her to have some other signs by now.

Hopefully she (and you) may be lucky and she's merely growing into a chubster. :)

she does have a rather chubby belly. At first I thought...she's a chunky one! compared to Abby. Abby just seems smaller...different breed, etc. I just thought they were growing and drinking more...cant tell which drinks more. Hmmm, you've got my mind wondering now.rolleyes If it is to be, i'm fine with it and will do everything to make sure she is healthy. If babies are in my future...I've already got a second cage for any boys! I'll try not to think about it too much...it would make me crazy! lol@)@)

posted here for health reasons

CORRECTION: I was wrong about the Huge weight gain...i weigh them in ounces.....then convert to grams using a conversion calculator...somehow its not coming out right i dont think...lol

Date: ABBY MOLLY
Grams Grams
7/16/09 258 309
3 days +26 +28
7/19/09 284 337
6 days +42 +25
7/25/09 326 362
4 days +23 +29

7days +39 +48
8/5/09 388 439
2 days +25 +128
8/7/09 413 567 (1 pound 4 ounces)

so from this last weigh in...Molly 'IS' gaining alot of weight.@)?/:{
I'm so confused! :{

If that is correct....Molly gained quite a bit of weight especially for a 2 day gain. All you can really do is keep an eye on her. Personally I would continue weighing her every 2 - 3 days and keep weighing Abby as well to compare gains...but that is by no means a steadfast rule.

before you panic completely check your scales out? I have a set which can vary depending on whether the stuff in them in centred or not... just a thought which is non pregnancy :)

Make sure that you weigh them at the same time of the day and the same distance from a big meal.

Fluctuations of 30-50g (1-2oz) in a day are not worrying; it's down to the food intake.
