Garden centre/ poorly Guinea pig

Hello Everyone.
New to this forum but wanted to tell you all what happened today. Sorry might be a bit long........

Went to my local garden centre today. Never really take any notice of the animals, but a Guinea pig caught my attention. Something was not right. I asked the assistant if i could see him. When i picked him up he had a piece of hay embedded in his eye. The assistant went to pull it out. I stopped him and said i would buy him and the other one in with him.
Took the poor piggie to my vets who removed the hay from his eye. Eye is quite bad and he needs to go back to on Friday.
Phoned the garden centre after the vets and told them i was quite disgusted with how i found the poor guinea pig. They offered me my money back for the two piggies and was telling me that all animals were checked this morning..... well according to the vet.... the piggie had that in his eye for at least 12-24 hours for it to cause the damage it has.
The garden centre have not heard the last off me yet over this.....

Welcome to the forum, hope the piggies are settling in ok.

Eyes can often look worse than they are, so hopefully he'll heal quickly. If the eye is cloudy it is just because it is healing, did the vet give you eye drops / cream? Otherwise you can bathe gently in Optrex or just boiled (cooled) water.

Given the vets bills, I'd certainly be following it up with the garden centre and either sending them the bill or demanding something in return, good luck

Yes the vet gave me Fucithalmic cream for his eye.
I was just so angry that she was trying to tell me that that had only just happened today.
Maybe she thought she was dealing with someone who has no knowledge at all.
I have 10 rabbits, 1 dog, 2 hamsters, 2 guinea pigs (well now i have 4 guinea pigs).
 
Well done for getting them out of there! Scrappy and I wish little piggie a speedy recovery ^)x>>

I hope his eye gets better as quickly as poss. I have to say that i probably do not have as much knowledge on Guinea pigs as i do rabbits, but i have joined this forum to learn a lot more.
 
Hello, and welcome to the forum, and very well done on rescuing those piggies today, and taking the poorly one straight to the vet. I hope you do follow it up with the garden centre (at the very least they should pay the vet bills), but the most important thing is that those little piggies have now got a wonderful home with you. And there are plenty of people here who will be able to help with any advice you need.
 
That's awful. That poor little guy.

I'm so glad you were there. If someone else had take him, they may not have even noticed.
That very thought scares me.

I check my boys every day for things like this.
 
Well done for rescuing them both, it sounds to me as though the hay had been in there for a few days, I have had experience with this with my guineas and they most definatley don't show too bad unless they have been like that for a number of days. It usually starts to show itself by not being as clear as normal and then slowly progresses to being white as the eye is trying to protect itself. Hope you get your vet bills paid for and hope the poor fella makes a speedy recovery.
 
Well done on getting them have you asked the garden center to contribute to the vets bills, cuz i certainly would. hope the little one feels better soon x

Was it a national garden centre as I haven't ever seen one selling guinea pigs before?

Thank you for all your replies.
Still giving garden centre grief over this. The piece of hay was a good inch long so how on earth nobody spotted this i do not know.
Little piggie (sorry, they are still not named) is being a very good patient and is ok with me putting the cream in his eye. I would not normally buy an animal (all my other animals are various rescues) but did not feel i could leave them there.
 
If you have problems getting your medicine in your piggie's eye, sit it on your lap with a nice portion of grass or veg and wait until it's distracted by the food to get the stuff into the eye.

Good on you for looking after the piggies. Thankfully, eye infections clear up pretty quickly!

So glad the 2 of them have now got a lovely caring home - really hope his eye returns to normal quickly.

The garden centre should pay for the treatment! (Sorry if they are and I've missed it!)

He is a very good patient and it is not looking so bad today. I have to take him back to the vets on Friday and she will put some more dye in his eye to see how he is doing.
I dont know how they even ended up for sale at this garden centre as the one with the injury is about 18 months old and the other one is supposed to be his son, who is about 6 months old. So they are not your typical cute baby pigs that most places sell.
Have also found what would appear to be small wound (that is now scabbed over) on the older ones back. Think I will have to keep a close eye on these two.....
 
Maybe you should call him Mad Eye and his little piggy friend Dumbledore? (sorry, huuge Harry Potter fan here!) Mad Eye, mainly becuase he has a poorly eye. Hope he gets better soon, I would definately give the Garden Centre a piece of my mind!

Welcome to the forum...what an angel you are to the guinea pigs.

What about Jack for the one with a bad eye! (one eyed Jack)
or Jack and Sparrow as in Captain Jack Sparrow!!
 
Reminds me of P-a-H store (cough -you know who I mean) Last year I saw one of the staff pouring a bag of really dustry hay on top of the GP's in and saying to them (as if they could understand, but really because I was nearby watching) "Sorry but this is what you are getting and if you will get in the way..." whilst tons of dust and some hay flew down on the tiny babies.
