whats the deal with feeding my piggys grass from my garden,,ive read its a no go but i was told by a vet its ok and dogs urine etc cant harm piggys ?

you can feed piggy's grass from the garden but it has to be free from pesticides, cat and dog pee and poop. if in doubt wash the grass first.

yes it can harm them. they have very sensitive stomachs.

thanks again !
I'm new on here so I'm really getting stuck in haha
so lets say i picked some grass and a dog etc had been on it with out me knowing,,but i then washed it,would it be ok for them then ?

it should be.

the best thing to do is to buy a run and put it in one place on the grass and then the dogs/cats etc cant get to that grass. once the weather is warmer the piggies can go out and eat for themselves :)

its ok we all had to start at the begining. at least your asking and learning :)

cheers,,,i only just got my first 2 pigs and love them to bits,,funny for a 38 year old man eh haha,i keep telling my self they are for my girlfriend haha
i noticed your in essex,so am i ,I'm in harlow.do you know any decent piggy vets in essex ?

its ok i started with 2 i now have 8 :) well i have 7 OH has one :)

do you have boys or girls?

i'm in colchester, check out the recommended vets bit in health and illness there should be a good vets in there. if not you could ask on there.

we have been feeding our guinea pigs grass for years; they are all perfectly fine - just need to wash it (we also dry it in a salad tumble-drier to remove excess water as tap water is very high in calcium an chlorine and is bad for them) and watch it's got no harmful poisonous herbs

thanks again everyone, i do fill my pigs bottle up with tap water ? is that a bad idea ?

i use tap water to i wouldnt worry too much.i figure i drink so they can to. but its up to you :)

do you have any pics of your piggies?

ok cool thanks,,not yet my girlfriend takes them all haha.ill see what i can do.x

thanks :) i like piggy pics. i must say i take lots of pics of mine lol :)

are they boys or girls? how old are they?

If your garden is not dog free, it pays fencing off some part for the piggies, so the dogs can't get on it. Fresh dog urine can be poisonous.

Also beware of creeping buttercup on your lawn; that is poisonous for guinea pigs, too, as are all plants of the buttercup family (ranunculacae).

Dandelion and clover are OK. Be careful to introduce grass only in smaller quantities at first. It can cause tummy upsets if piggies are not used to lots of fresh rich grass.

they are about 12 weeks old as when i bought them i was told between 6 and 8 weeks old,,both boys and very cheeky !
and as for the grass i may just leave it ,they seem to be loving the curly kale and parsley !!

awww still babies :) they do love parsley mine like dill and basil and coriander to :)
