Garden piggies

Crunchie and sparkle dont like to be picked up initially although they love cuddle time. and its abit of a battle getting them out of their run but I'm sure they are just taking the **** out of me:)

I know some of you here let your piggies have free run of the garden so i would just like to ask you a few questions..
Do your piggies come to you when you call them/ or offer a treat?
I'm just thinking that i could spend hours trying to get my two in.

Dont you have problems with cats, i know you wouldnt leave them alone but we have a cat next door, and i think that would worry me.

But i think it would be lovely for them to be able to roam free in the garden for a while

Hi Claire,

Mine don't free range but I use grids with mesh over the top to give them a big run around. I'm just weary of birds we have a few here that are large and can take pigs off. It's not just cats and foxes that are a problem it's our wingy friends too.

Hi Claire, I let our piggies out (weather permitting) but they also have a run so they have access to grass every day. They love it and get all excited when they are being let out, and yes, it does take ages to get them back in, we have small bushes and plants round the edges of the garden and the cheeky chimps try and hide when its time to come in! Ive found the best way is to leave an opening between the hutch and run and gently persuade them to go there! But it is worth letting them out as they tear around the garden and get to run a lot faster than they could in the run. We also have an old tent bottom sheet that we put flat on the grass and they love running under that too. We only have a small back garden and I have not had to mow the grass since having the piggies - what a bonus! (Although they have destroyed the odd garden plant). They are always exhaused and mucky after being let out and spend a lot of time dozing and grooming in the hutch.

When in the garden they will munch the grass all around you if you are sat down and will take food from the hand but they wont let you pick them up. The only way I can pick up the piggies is from the hutch and they struggle a bit until in your arms and then they are ok, they love brush time on our laps, but you have to have the pair together as they dont like being separated.

I have a cat myself and although he has never gone for them I would never ever trust him as he is quite a devious cat! When out in the garden there is always someone there to chase cats away, they are only left when they are in the secure run and hutch. We dont have any big birds round here, but where I used to live I had a friend who was taking his labrador puppy for a walk over a golf course and a huge buzzard thing that was being exercised swooped down and he dived ontop of the puppy to save it - so if you live near open ground you never know what might be up there even in the uk!

I'm sure Claire your piggies would love being let out in your garden, as long as its secure and you are there they will have a great time, good luck with the getting them to come when you call..... I think my calls fall on deaf ears!, all the best, Elaine x
 
i have a game catching my pair and they dont come when i call but they are male so that says it all .i dont let them run free incase go under shed or eat some thing they shouldnt
 
Mine have the run of the completely fenced-in garden ONLY

- when they have bonded enough and are comfy enough in the run, so they wont run away and hide in panic

- when they have learned to come into my upturned pigloo, so I don't have to chase them or are able to return to the run/hutch under their own steam

- I have made sure there is no cat or rat lurking in the garden

- when I'm around to keep an eye out on them (usually when I work in the garden).
