Hey piggy lovers! I've had my Poppy X-rayed today as she was looking bloated and my supisions were correct. She's 99% her usual self and although her tummy is extended (I know how she feels there), it's quite squishy. I'm now trying to work out what's causing the bloat? She likes her celery, so I'm wondering about this now. Trial and error I guess. I've not given any fresh veg, just a mound of fresh hay, this eve and have gut meds to give her until Sat, I just hope it helps as I'm on holiday for a week from Sunday 😳 My Mum is great with them, but I can't expect her to administer meds. Does anyone have any advice please? x

Hi! Please follow the tips in these guide here and take your piggy off any fresh veg for the time being until their tummy has settled down for at least two days. Then you can reintroduce veg slow and gradually, one more veg with each meal provided that there are no upsets. Monitor the weight daily by weighing and top her but with fibrous syringe feed.
Bloat, Gi Stasis ( No Gut Movement) And Not Eating
The temptation to overfeed watery veg and fruit in hot weather!

Thanks for the advice. You'll probably hear her weeking for food from where you are, she's very vocal. I'll have to feed my other pig whilst Pop's is having her meds.

I've started massaging her tummy and she doesn't seem overly bothered, so I'm hoping I've caught it early enough. I'm aware that this will probably be ongoing now (on and off), which is a shame as she's not quite 3 yet. At least I'm on the lookout now 😊

So, Poppy has shown some improvement with the gut stimulant, hay and pellet diet and tummy massages, but she's still swollen/gassy. I know this won't cure itself overnight, we have a vets appt this arvo and I wanted to go armed with a list of potential anti Gas meds that they have on prescription. Poppy seems to take meds OK, so hopefully my Mum can manage next week (I feel terrible). I've been worrying so much and it's taken the emphasis of our first family holiday abroad with my little girl (we go tomoz). Poppy isn't in a dangerous state at the mo, she's eating tons of Timothy hay and pooing a treat, let's hope she at least stays like that.

I git rid of my guinea pigs bloat within a few hours using infacol 1ml syringed. (Wilkos)Gripe water 1ml syringed(wilkos). And buscopan 1 x 10mg tablet(boots behind counter gold packet) crushed and dropped into the back of a 1ml syringe using a a folded piece of paper . Stick your finger over the mouth end then suck up the water. Then let your pig run around the floor for a bit.

Hi, thanks for your replies. Well, the vets trip was interesting, I saw a different vet who said that judging by the fact that the X-ray didn't show much gas?! and Poppy was showing no signs of discomfort, she was absolutely fine (some piggies are just shaped that way)!
I gave my Mum strict feeding instructions, she likes to treat them when on their piggy hols, and all was fine. She didn't seem any different on pick up today.
I just keep an eye on her for the time being and limit gassy foods (which I try to anyway).
