I'm just gauging interest and doing a bit of market research at a the same time for my new piggy gifts business. I would really appreciate any feedback and/or opinions etc as this will help me when setting up my shop.

I'm currently working out costs etc and deciding on what prices to charge for my products. I'd like to know how much would you be willing to pay for this notebook if you were buying it? (It's not quite A4 but is larger than A5 size and is lined, the Guinea Pig is made from felt and has a 3D goggly eye). I've worked out that I'd need to charge at least £4.00 to cover costs, which would include the P&P. Would you be happy to pay that?

Also would you be interested in custom notebooks with a personalised piggy on? How much would you be willing to pay for a custom notebook?

Thank you your help is much appreciated :)

It is always hard to gauge prices... and you always need to make sure you cover costs... If I was you I would start a poll on a thread to gauge opinion.

I like the eyes on the piggy :)

Yeah that's a good idea, I might start one in a bit. I'll see whether anyone else replies on here first though.

Googly goggly eye :P

:D I can appreciate how much work and expense has gone into making this notebook, but I think £4 is a bit much for one that is less than A4 size. How thick is it?

I'd say It's fairly thick, at least 1 cm and is lined inside. :)

Drezella, its really good you worked out your base price, so know you can't sell them under £4 otherwise you will lose money. I think you could maybe sell at £5, I dont think anyone would be paying any more than that though unless the materials were fancier but then that would automatically bump up your cost anyway. I think the custom option is a really good one. Maybe make some normal at £4 and custom at £5? Is it just you making them? If so, maybe start with just the custom option as that would most likely be your base, as I think the people most like to buy your notebooks would be guinea fanatics like us on this forum and most people would want the guinea pig to look like their own.

I think notebooks are one of those things that the price can be made way cheap if its mass produced. Sort of like how its quite hard to make bread but to make it on an industrial scale is easy. I'm not an economist so I cant explain it well, but its like to buy in tons paper, plastic, etc and then the distribution with stores and stuff.

Hi there, very dificultlt but l would say yes defenatly £4 for the note book , I remember somthing like that
on prevous fundrasers that were held for cavy corner , or was it the gp haven foram ?

I know l still have things that l bought ages ago,

I you want a guidline google Bex Pets, it is a long time ago and my memery is a bit hazzy
But if l am not mistaken, she made a hole range of guinia pig items including
A little white pig that l have by my bed side, it is a po pori piggy, l put lavender oil on it and it retains the fragerance
For up to a week,
The smell of the lavender helps me sleep

having a 10 year old daughter with more stationary that WHSmiths..... I have bought notebooks for anywhere from 99p to £9.99 !! Just work out that you have covered your costs and a poll is a good idea.

Forgot to say in answer to your question @Wigwig, yes it is just me making them. So I probably will focus on custom orders, but will do a few generic ones also and see how well they do. :)

I also made another one today and thought I might try a crested one tomorrow:

Very Beautiful! When your shop opens, will the postage just be for the UK or could you send to Ireland?

I can post to Northern Ireland as that's included in the UK postage costs, for the Republic of Ireland I'd have to charge a bit more to cover the postage costs as its classed as international mail/parcels but I'd be happy to post to there if people are happy to pay for the postage costs. :)

I am in the Republic of Ireland and I wouldn't mind paying extra for postage costs.

I've looked up shipping/postage costs and for Royal Mail International Standard Mail it would cost between £2.45 - £3.45 depending on whether it's a large letter or small parcel. It'd take 3-5 days to come but wouldn't be tracked.

Or there is International tracked and signed mail/parcels which costs around £8.20 and takes 3-5 days to arrive. A tracking number/info would be provided. So I could provide either option depending on what people would be happy to pay. :)

I'm hoping to have the shop open by the last week of October as have a week off work then which would be ideal to get everything weighed, photographed etc. I'll post an announcement on the forum when I'm officially open for business :D shouldn't be too long now, I've been busy making things. :)

Exciting! You probably can't wait! How long have you been making stuff for?

A few months, but I've also been practicing a lot during that time too with moulding the clay for my polymer clay items. :)

Ok well Wilko is my go to place for considering prices of things and they do a hardback decorative notebook (A5 size and in this case my little pony lol) for £3.00. That is without postage included. If you want it delivered its £4 delivery which takes it up to £7. My Little Pony Hard Cover Notebook A5

I personally think you should be looking at £4 without the delivery included so think you could easily be selling these for £5-£8 with postage included. Even at that price with delivery it is still remaining a very reasonably priced product. You might also want to consider your time for making them though. Bearing in mind that the national minimum wage for over 25 year olds is £6.70 per hour you will at least want a contribution towards your time and effort into making these.

Yes good point. Also Etsy charge a small fee for listing the product and then take commission off your sale once you've sold the item, (it's nowhere near as much as eBay) but I'll have to bear that in mind because I'll have packaging and postage costs as well on top of that. So it's looking like it's going to be £6.00 - £7.00 for these larger notebooks and £5.00 - £6.00 for the smaller ones which includes the P&P, depending on how much Etsy will deduct from that price.

The thread was more to gauge interest and see what people would be happy to pay. I know myself that I've paid up to £10 before for a notebook or similar from shops like Paperchase. I'm not saying that mine are anywhere near as good as the ones in shops like that, but I really do have to make sure it's profitable otherwise it's just not worth doing it and I'll have wasted hundreds of pounds on materials to get set up. I must have spent nearly £200 already just buying all the polymer clay, it costs an arm and a leg. I wish it was cheaper lol.

I've got a week off soon at the end of October, so that will be when I sit down with it all and price everything up properly before I list each item for sale. :) So I'm hoping to have the shop open just before Halloween. How exciting! :)

I think if it's unique and has a specialist market people will pay more. Look at Quernus Crafts. Her little figures are all unique and Tailored to mouse, piggy and bunny fans, who all pay well above the base cost for models, and she earns a living out of it. (I have bought several). There are many crafters who set their initial prices too low, it's then difficult to increase the price because that's what people expect to pay, and they are making a profit of about a pound an item on intricate hand made items meaning that they are working for free on these gorgeous items. I guess what I'm saying is don't undervalue yourself. It's easier to reduce a price than to increase it.
