Gave the boys iceburg lettuce today

They had ran out of salad and greens on Friday and have been really grumpy without it, sitting in their salad dish etc. I've been ill so couldn't go out saturday but I went to the shop today and all they had was iceburg so I got them some of that.

They loved it and practically leaped out of the cage trying to get to the dish I was feeding it from. They then went nuts and started popcorning, darting around the cage, ram-raiding their little house (which went flying in the process) and tipped up their food dish. I've never seen them go so silly before.

I didn't realise this lettuce was bad for them is that what has made them go so hyper? will they be ok?

They should be ok, maybe cut down a little on veggies tomorrow just in case they have a touch of the squits. As you say, not good for them as it is full of water and no nutrition. Enjoy watching the popcorning, they will love you, they probably thought it was a treat. xx

They'll be fine, there isn't no nutrition in Iceburg lettuce not even for us humans. Maybe cut back on watery veg tomorrow but I wouldn't worry.

i tried it with mine years ago and they didn't touch it... clever pigs...rolleyes

The only reason iceberg si to be avoided is because its got no nutrition. It's just water. They probably went hyper because they loved being fed some leafy veg again! It's happiness about the situation, not the actual food that sent them loopy.

I wouldn't worry about it either. When we first had our girls, I got home from work to find my OH grinning. He seemed really pleased with himself that he'd gave them a huge bowl of iceburg (he didn't realise they shouldn't eat it) and that they loved it. I was furious as I was so scared but they were fine x

They'll be ok for a one-off but iceberg lettuce also has nitrates in it that guinea's can't digest very well. x
