Has anyone got any experiance dealing with life long macilusson? My poor boy
Has just been diagnosed with it and is having to have his teeth filed every 6 weeks.. my guineapig is a happy boy but
I'm worried it will stress him out bein put under every few weeks.. I am happy to do it though I dont care about the money.
Just need some reasurrance :/

Thankyou. Yes alot of useful info on there. I just want to speak to people who have been in this situation too

Hiya! I am very sorry about your problem. Malocclusion is a gutting diagnosis!

Please contact the The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary. It is a sanctuary for dental piggies that is run by one of our mods in conjunction with a very experienced piggy vet. Between them, they can give guinea pigs with chronic dental problems a normal, happy life ith all the regular care that his condition makes necessary. The sanctuary will take in piggies from all over the country.

Thankyou.
He is not till but I have to keep a close eye on him as all his teeth are misaligned so he cannot grind his teeth down. We are havin to mush his food with water for him to eat. And he has to have his teeth filed every 6 weeks. Its sounds alot of work and stress but I would never get him pur to sleep as he is healthy. Unfortunately he has had it since he was born but has only developed now.

I have pmed furryfriends. She is very experienced in caring for piggies with lifelong tooth problems. Sadly, malocclusion happens occasionally, only that it is a much, much bigger problem for guinea pigs than than if it happens in humans.

I have grown up with piggys all my life and I love them. He is my only boy left now so I am able to look after his needs. I just need some advice on how to deal with the condition to mke his life as normal as it can be. Vet bills are not a worry

Also is insuring my piggy worth it for this sake ?

My little boy has had dental problems since he was 2 months old. He has to have his teeth done once a month for the rest of his life. Yesterday he turned 2 years old! He does fine with his treatment and has never stopped eating normally. My vet gives him a whiff of gas, gets in quick, and he starts to come around the moment she takes off his little mask. I don't think he realises what exactly has happened to him and has coped well with it all. For the first day or so he does have a bit of difficulty manipulating the food into his mouth, so I cut everything into thin short pieces. But he is not in pain, it's just that he hasn't quite got the hang of picking up food with his shortened teeth. I have pet insurance for my dog and would dearly have loved to insure my piggies but we are somewhat backwards here in OZ. The only pet insurance you can get is for cats & dogs.

Dental piggies can be a handful! Thankfully my dental boy only needs a trim about once a year as long as he keeps eating tons of hay.....

I am glad Wiebke pointed you in the direction of The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary and Furryfriends as Debbie is probably the most experienced person on here as regards dental problems like malocclusion. hopefully she will be able to give plenty of advice and support although you sound like you've been doing a grand job yourself so far!

Paws crossed for you and your boy, but as long as he gets the care and love he needs then you're doing fine!

Thankyou all so much for the advice and support. I am a piggy lover and do know alot about them but unfortunately I have never came across this. I will do my best for him I just wanted some advice on haw to give him a comfy life. Also does any of you know if the vets give * a deal or help * on the costs as*he will be needing dental surgery every 6 weeks.
I'm not bothered about the money but if the vets can help me out that wd be great.

After the first treatment, my vet informed me it would be lifelong and she could offer me future treatments at half price. So, I think it's worth asking your vet about a discount since your boy seems to need to have it done almost as often as mine.

Thanks I will bare that in kind :)
Do you give ** guinea pain med? My vet said he may b sore after treatments and is givin me metcaf I belive its called. Also I am usin baytril to get rid of any infections

Out vets use liquid children's tramal for piggy pain which I have heard on this forum from UK members is better than metacam. You might ask for that. For my almost 1300gram boy I need only syringe .07mls every 8 hours. It is such a small amount that there is no problem getting it into him.

Our vets use the all purpose baytril here as well. But I have found it is not good for everything. It cured my one boy's URI in 5 days. But after a month on it, my dental boy still had his UTI. So now he has just finished a 2 week course of Bactrim (septrin in the UK?) which is apparently best for UTIs anyway. I have heard that Zithromax is actually the best for any dental infections and that is the one we will be trying next if the Bactrim has failed.

Thankyou :)
He seems to be doing really good on his antibiotics at the moment, so I wont rush to change it yet.

Please be careful with advice about antibiotics. They are very infection specific so just because it cures one problem in one piggy it won't necessarily be the right thing for somepig else! Have a good discussion with your vet on all the options.....

Sorry, I wasn't aware I was giving advice, only information about my experiences with anti-biotics.

Hi Jodie, Worth speaking to Debbie at the Sanctuary, she is the owner of this board 'Furryfriends' She is very knowledgable and can give you lots of tips on dental piggies and how to care for them.

We had a piggie who had teeth and root problems, the root problems could never be rectified with her I am affraid, but our vet helped us greatly.

The vet has gave you metacam as a painkiller, this will cetainly help but there are other painkillers out there too if metacam doesn't do the job - so don't worry, just take it as it comes.

Please make sure you weigh regulary if you don't already as it allows you to keep an idea of how much food you are getting into your piggie. Your doing a great job with your little one, what is his name? His he the one in your avatar?

Thankyou so much :)
Luckily he can eat on his own but we have to mush his food with water as he struggles with hard food
His name is charlie and hes a long haired. And yes that is him in my avatar x

Thankyou:), he is a little beauty.
Hes just had his morning course of meds and is now tucking into his breakfast. Mushed excell with chopped lettuce :)
