Pumpkin as about 200 grams overweight, i must add that she was like that when she came to us. My friend pointed out today that she is very fat, he described her as 'butternut squash shaped' I must admit I have had my fears that she may be pregnant but as she isnt displaying any nesting behaviours and I cant feel any babies I dont think that she actually is :\ I cant limit her food as she is housed with two other sows and I'm afraid that she will just continue to eat the same amount leaving the other two with little :( I really do not know what to do about putting her on a diet or whether there may be something wrong with her... sorry for such a long post I just thought if I could put as much about the situation as possible it would make it easier for people to offer help and advice
Thanks guys
x

Some sows are by nature very "butternut squash" shaped and have big bums. A guinea pig can weigh between 800g and 1800g without being overweight.

How do you know that Pumpkin is 200g overweight? Just because she weighs 200g more than your other sows? My sows' weights, for instance, range from 900g to 1300g. Quite a few members on here have even heavier sows that are not overweight - right up and over 1500g.

that pic of fflur is comic gold :D i love ittt, i read online that they needed to be between 600 and 900g in weight and shes 1100 and so i panicked, maybe she is just a booty beauty... thanks for putting my mind at rest Wiebke your a star :)

How long have you had her? Guinea gestation is between 69-72 days. Maybe that will put ** mind at rest. Where did she come from?

Also most importantly, how much does she weigh?

I think most of mine are between those weights biggest being just over 1000g took ages to get him to that weight. tiny one is still around 500g and hes been here 5 months rolleyes

Weights are a great misconception - many people (even vets) assume that girls must by needs be lighter than boys. Personally, any adult sow that I have adopted at 700g was skinny and you could feel every bone in her body.

It is very hard for grazers like guinea pigs to become seriously overweight. The only real case I have seen on here was from somebody who got piggies from all too well meaning people who had stuffed their piggies on a diet consisting of mainly sugary and starchy treats given several times a day! malletheadmalletheadmallethead

A truly overweight piggy has a belly that touches the floor and is usually not moving around much anymore.

i genuinely dont think she can be pregnant, I cant feel any babies in her at all, iv had her just over a month and i got her from a friend who is pregnant and rehoming all her animals.

here is a pic of her anyways, I think what got me really flustered was when my best friend was like oooh she looks like a butternut squash and i was like argh pregnant guinea pig shape D:

I think she just has piggy love handles

Pumpkin is a lovely girl and does definitely NOT look pregnant! Many girls tend to develop a pearshaped figure when they reach adulthood.

You judge a girl's condition on how skinny (or not) her upper body is and how much her hip bones are sticking out, not on the size of her back end.

her nails have since been trimmed, that pic was taken the night after we got her, shes not a fan of the manicure/pedicure process mind you haha. She has lovely groomed feet now though :) Thanks for all your helps guys it is much appreciated x

Oh sweetie i'd never put a piggie on a diet unless it was for a medical reason!
she looks delightfully rounded i'd be a proud mummy and happy to have a piggie looking like that!
My girls are 1025 and 1055 each and not quite 1yr old
Pumpkin is gorgeous x)x)drooldrooldrool
