Will be thinking of you and George tonight. It's been a bit of a shock how quickly it's happened.
Hugs for you and all your piggies. x

Yes, Sharon, he has gone downhill very rapidly and I am seriously concerned. He seems a bit brighter now, but He really needs to start eating if he is going to stand any chance. He is loving being with his ladies and showed an interest in a spinach leaf just a few minutes ago. I was so pleased.

I have just given him some more fruit juice and daktarin as I really want him to have every chance. He needs to turn the corner tonight if he is to pull through.

Thanks, Clairelove!

Your posts are keeping my spirits up this evening. I so hope my little boy can rally. He is looking so much brighter now than he did earlier this evening and I hope that we can pull through.

Oh i am so sorry to hear this! Poor George! And poor you it must be so incredibly worrying.
One of my pigs Patch (RIP) stopped eating a few weeks ago, the vet treating him was very knowledgable about guineas.
As a last attempt to encourage him eating she prescribed Zantac Syrup 2ml twice daily and Metoclopramide both are medications for humans, and Fibreplex is good its a prebiotic, it comes in a tube with measured doses, Patch was on 1ml 3xdaily, he weighed 750g.
It did help Patch a little he did start to pick at his food more and was less reliant on the syringe feeding. But unfortunately it wasn't enough for Patch, his problems were internal and congenital quite possibly his liver, and their was nothing more the vet could do for him so i had to let him go.
Might be worth giving the vet a call and talking about the above meds?
I really hope George pulls through, I will be thinking of you both, I know how terrifying it is xx

How is George this morning, Pollie? I really hope being back with his friends gives him the boost he needs. xx

Thanks for asking, Laura. I got up at 5.30am to syringe George fluids and he was in a really bad way.

I decided to have him put to sleep as he seemed past the point of return and looked pathetic. I gave him some metacam and when i came to take him to the vets ay 10am he was much brighter.

He has had some more daktarin and 5ml of banana. I have decided to give 2.5ml of mashed banana every 30 mins. It is touch and go, but I want to give him every chance.

Oh bless you both.

I hope he's okay. You are doing all you can!

Hope the banana and all the love do the trick.

x

Very sadly George was put to sleep this afternoon at 6pm. He had not pooped or weed since 6am this morning and today and yesterday had not been swallowing food.

Helping him pass peacefully was the final act of kindness I could offer him. I will start a thread in Rainbow Bridge when I am ready.

Thanks to all who offered support via this thread.

The vet has kindly offered to do a post mortem to see whether any light can be shed on his deterioration and I will update this thread when the results are known.

I'm so sorry Pollie. You did everything you could for him. Big hugs.

Rest well, dear George. xx

Really sorry to hear this. I'd been following this thread and was really hoping for a better outcome for you both. Thinking of you at this sad time x

Thanks for all of your comments everyone.

I have just had a phone call from the vet. In the post mortem she found that George had a hole in his lower jaw (mandible) which was filled with pus. It might have been related to the original abscess, but there was no reasonable way in which this could have been detected or treated with the information on his other symptoms that we had. It seems that the infection had gone into his bone, so long term antibiotics would have been the only possible answer. I know from a friend's experience that once an abscess has gone into the bone it frequently reoccurs. There was food in his gut, which was my main concern as I found the thought of him wasting away despite all of my attempts at handfeeding very distressing.

I also suspect heart disease as during his illness his ears went black instead of their usual dark pink. However, because he was put to sleep it was not possible to examine his heart during post mortem.

I'm glad you got some answers from the post mortem. You and the vet did everything possible for your little boy, and I hope this is some comfort to you.

Best wishes to you and your piggies,
Sharon, Flumpet and Delilah. x
