Hi everyone :)

I posted last week about having Georgie's teeth trimmed twice in two weeks. They are growing crooked again after only 5 days!

I have been feeding him mushed pellets which he is eating and carrot peelings, I also pull grass for him, all of which he can manage. Can't eat any solid carrot or pull grass himself etc. I've been watching very closely when he eats and there is a stange noise when he chews. its a kind of soft squeeky noise and he chews much slower than the others.

The first vet that inspected his molars said they looked fine, but the second wanted to give him anasthetic just to look at them 98)
I am trying to find a more piggy savvy vet, but no luck yet. I am in South east kent.

He does not seem ill and is trying so hard to eat. Do you think it sound like molar problems. Anyone who has experience of this, I would really appreciate suggestions :'(

Ginger has had her teeth cut several times has not always seemed 100% right since the problem started 3 years ago & she is old. She eats a lot slower than she used to and breaks food into smaller pieces before eating it. She has done this since the teeth have been cut. Ginger makes a lot of noise when eating and pulls faces, like yawning. Someone on here suggested it could be food getting stuck and that she is trying to get it out. I would be concerned that he is not eating carrot or grass himself because, although she is slow, Ginger gets there in the end. I would probably take him back to the first vet for another check to be certain. At least that won't involve anesthetic. Hope this helps and good luck :)

i am in oz, but up the top of health is a thread called recomended vets, have a look and see if there is one there that is near you SE kent. but would definately go to a piggy savvt vet and give the 2 you have been too a miss. hopefully when all the other UK people wake up there will be more help for you and georgie. have you a rescue near you? they could recomend a good piggy vet, or the rspca could recomend one also. good luck, sending hugs and healing vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks

He does make yawning faces when he eats too. I have also seen him chew greens and then pull it out of his mouth.

When they have spurs on their molars, what behaviour does this cause?

I've tried the vet list already and nothing near me sadly. Going to phone a rescue though and see if they can suggest.

Good luck with your vet search, it may be that you will have to travel a bit. If you can locate a guinea pig rescue any where near you and ask them which vet they use for their pigs, thats a good indication that the vet is piggy savvy :)

I would cut his veg into thin slivers so he can manage them better but as long as he is eating, its a good sign but he will need his teeth seeing to as he could get ulcers in his mouth. Chrissie at www.gorgeousguineas.com sells neem toothpaste for humans but this is supposed to be very good for sore mouths in piggies :)

He is having 2 small bowls of pellet mush per day, a couple of handfuls of grass I pull for him and some carrot peelings. All of this he can manage and I put his girlfriend in the run first so he eats alone and I know he's had it all cos she's getting sooooo fat with all the extra food I am putting in for Georgie ;D ;D

This is buying some time for me to find a good vet. He's still lively and climbing the bars when I go to see him, which maked me feel more sure it must be teeth, he just doesn't act sick :-\

All you have said is indicative of a problem with the molars,or possibly, more seriously,a misalignment in the jaw.You do need to find a vet who is good at dental work.

Is there any chance you could get to Surrey?,my vet in Ewell was trained by Peter Gurney in dental work and is excellent. She is willing to talk to people over the phone, and is happy to talk to other interested vets and advise about treatment.Anne does not use sedation for dental work.

If you would like surgery details pm me.

This sounds like the problem I am having with Monty with his spurs on his teeth, all that you have described is very similar. He had his teeth trimmed 2 weeks ago and I have been syringe feeding him since but hes no better, usually he recovers immediately. I hope your piggy gets better x x

Agree with Mary O0 :smitten:

that's defo a toofie problem......all the same signs our boy does :( :( :(
If they're doing that yawning thing it's there little tongue getting caught in the overgrown molars and this can also cause ulcers as well, i've exprienced all of this :(

Good luck with Georgie, Duke sends him manly cuddles and wheeks as he knows what toofie probs are like :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
for Georgie :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
