I have fed my piggies on Gertie for years. They are fussy with it and pick out the bits they want and push out of the bowl the bits they don't want so I end up throwing an awful lot away. >:(

I know that there is a thread going with regard to Gertie but I was wondering as a newbie to the forum and without going through the 86 postings ... am I right in thinking that Gertie got the "no no" with members on this forum?

I have wanted to try another food for ages and have bought little bags of various mixes as an additon to my normal 15kg Gertie, so's not to hurt my piggies digestive system. Gertie is now really expensive and if folks think it isn't the best, then I will gladly try other foods recommended.

Any advice, happily received.

I would steer clear of mixes altogether as selective feeding is a risk with any of them. Gerty just happens to be one of the most rubbish of the mixes. Choices are from the likes of Oxbow Cavy Cuisine (brilliant but hard to get a hold of and pricy), Supa Guinea Excel and Supreme Science Selective when it comes to pellets. There are threads on each of these to look over members' opinions on.

I don't like mixes, they cause the piggies to selectively feed which means they don't get all the bits they need from the mix. I (and my piggies!) love Supa Guinea Excel. It's in a pellet so no selective feeding and I guess it tastes nice to them too.

Gerty also has loads of artificial colours in it too which I'm sure I've read somewhere can cause cancer?

My pigs have Wagg guinea pig crunch and I can honestly say that even though they leave the odd bit, most days they clear the bowl

Same here :)

Mine went off the Gertie, fussy things! My 2 big boars have Wagg pellets which they guzzle and rarely leave any at all, and the others like the Wagg guineapig crunch. They pick out their favourite bits and throw the rest all over the place - i try them on pellets every now and then but they seem to prefer the crunch. A lot is wasted though.

Supa Excel pellets and Science Selective pellets - all devoured.

Also my piggy's black coat is now a beautiful sheen and doesn't seem to moult so much - O0

When i first got my guineas,i fed them Gertie,as i didn't know any better. They only ate the bits they liked, and left the rest.
My vet recommended Oxbow Cavy Cuisine, and they both love it.It is very good for them too.It is a bit expensive, but it is worh it to have fit guineas, and there is no waste,as they eat it all.
I buy it online form Bunny Bazaar.

mine were very picky with gerty & ended up wasting half of it, so I mixed super excel with it for a while & now they just have that, empty dishes everyday O0

I tried Gertie out a few weeks ago and they loved it but after reading all the information on here I decided not to buy it again.

I have always been feeding Supa Guinea Excel which they love but in addition they now also get a second bowl with Pets at Home Museli. They eat both and don't seem to have any preference. It just all depends on the day. Thinking about maybe switching back to having only Supa Guinea Excel as they could do with loosing a bit of weight....

How heavy are they exactly? Pigs can be quite heavy and it's not a good idea to make them lose weight forcibly.

I totally agree with DSL - unless they have put on a huge amount of weight suddenly then I would not contemplate enforcing a diet. It can really do damage to their internal organs to suddenly change the food or quantity. And it does appear to be quite rare to have obese GPs.

I'm not going to put them on a strict diet. Just thinking about taking their museli away as they only eat some of it. They will still have their Supa Guinea Excel, hay, and fresh food.

Molly is just over 1300 grams and has quite a double chin. She's fast when she moves but doesn't believe that much in exercise. All the others are over 1100 grams as well but not really as much out of shape as Molly.

1300g is fine I have a four that size, it's average for pigs really. They can be lazy! Then again I've a rabbit who just sits around all day! :D

My self black boar is only 8 months old and already is 1120g - gaining on average 28g per week. I have no worries about the possibility of obesity (I adore chunkier piggies anyway).

:)I used to feed mine on Gerty guinea as they were fed on that in the rescue, but they only ate some of it and I ended up throwing a lot away. I now feed the Pets at Home brand of the pellets and they seem to enjoy it. :)

As I am now keen to get my piggies off Gertie I have tried mine on Spillers Muesli for a couple of days, alongside their Gertie, in a separate bowl. That got the thumbs down! ? I didn't like the look of it or the smell ... I thought it smelt like antiseptic.

My mum has been to Tesco's today and got me 2kg of the purple bagged GP muesli so I will try them on that ... watch this space.

i tried mine with the tesco muesl;i but mine wouldnt eat it lol then i went to oxbow pellets which they liked but i cant afford them now so were on P@H pellets which they like :)
