HELLO for the past week or two i have seen a large number of moths flying around my house. I thought they were coming in from the open window, but when i see more and more and the windows are closed, i started to look for other reasons.. when i opened my plastic Tupperware type box, containing approx 5 kg of gertie guinea pig muesli food, THERE were dozens of moths flying out from the food, I quickly threw the lot away, can anyone explain if this has happened to anyone else? and is it a normal occurrence ? should i write to the
manufacturers? thanks for reply's..

It's really common with muesli food, as they are grain moths. I've definitely had it happen before in the past, with various pet foods. I personally wouldn't bother contacting the manufacturer, but that's just me.

The good news is that they aren't too bad to get rid of, unlike some other grain critters, like weevils.

nice to know, it has happened before . just a waste of money and food

It's much more common during the summer months. Apparently it's when the temperature hits a certain level, along with higher humidity.

I've even noticed it in pet shops before - especially the ones where they sell bags they make up themselves from larger mags of Gertie etc - where there will be loads of moths circling unopened bags of muesli food!

I think storing food below 15C is supposed to prevent them from developing, you could write to the manufacturer and they may offer some form of replacement but it's not an unusual occurrence. If you've had moths flying I'd check any other grain based foodstuffs because they can infest your house.:...

I'd also suggest considering changing your pigs onto a pellet such as Burgess excel or a different museli mix such as wagg, if you read the review sticky for Gerty it's not considered to be a very good food.
