I went out and bought supplies for when my new piggies come in a week.

I just read this morning that my brand of pellets i chose may not be a good choice.

"All living things" brand. Added vit c. First ingredient is sun cured timothy hay. Second is sun cured alfalfa hay. Then corn, soybean meal, ground oats(etc)

Do i need to get a diff kind? There are corn and seeds in this mix. I live in the usa if that matters.

Also, how do you know when timothy hay is bad? The hay i picked up is green bit seems dry-ish and maybe even yellowing slightly. How long does hay stay fresh?

You need to get a complete food not a mix. The mixes contain a lot of junk which is bad for guinea pigs. I use Burgess Excell. I am not sure you can get that over there.

Does the hay have a nice smell? Usually you can tell by the smell. If it has no smell it is probably old.

Is it like a muesli, with loads of different little mixed flakes and bits? That's never as good for them because they'll eat selectively -- they'll take the pieces they like and leave the ones they don't, which gives them an unbalanced diet. You don't have to throw it all away, but I'd keep it as a little treat now and again, NOT as their main daily food.

You want those icky plain brown pellets, I'm afraid. They don't look nearly as appetising, but they ensure your piggie gets all the vitamins they need and can't leave any out, and you can add some variety with fresh veggies anyway.
