My partner keeps going on about getting a kitten. We already have 2 piggies and a hammy that are housed in our spare room, but am I right in thinking cats and rodents do not go well together? Our pigs and hammy all live in their own homes, but do cats not have stalking instincts? I've told him no because the pigs and hamster won't be safe but he's like a child! He won't stop going on at me!

My cats fine with the guineas...it's bunny's he's terrible with! Once they're through the kitten stage they're fine, it's whilst they're a kitten you have to be careful as they are learning to hunt and kill...so everything is fair game to them.

Just keep the kitten separate from the pigs/hamsters when they're having floor time.

I think it depends on the cat to be honest. When I go on holiday my friend looks after the pigs, she has three cats. One of them, Izzy, made friends with Pixie and apparently she slept on their cage and would miaow to them!

When my cat was a kitten he would sleep on top of my rat cage, and never caused them any trouble. Now he watches my rodents, and guards the pigs' outdoor run from other cats, but that's about it (but their cages are secure and he's never left unsupervised around them!). However, like was said above, I think it depends on the kitten...my cat is an idiot! :))

Our old pet cat who was a serious hunter (used to bring in rabbits) never once paid attention to our own rabbits, piggies or hamsters. My current cat is terrified of them!
Most cats, if introduced at a young age will grow up not to veiw them as prey although a kitten will be curious for sure, it likely wont hurt them. However it pays to make sure they are securely caged or, idealy ina room that can be closed from the cat.

years ago i had one of our guinea pigs taken by a neighbours cat (before adding a lid to our run), and my next door neighbour last year had her hammie half dragged through its cage bars by his stomach by her cat when the hammie climbed the bars when the cat was left in the room (a horrfying find for her 7 year old daughter) so i wouldnt trust a cat anywhere near any small furry creature. my cat never really bothered with the guinea pigs, but i wouldnt leave him for a second with them alone, and they were always shut in a secure enclosed run when not in their hutch. i think as long as the pets are kept in separate rooms when you arent around, it shouldnt be an issue. many people do keep small furries and cats in the same household, just be careful :)

I have a cat along with 4 piggies, 2 gerbils, a hamster and 2 goldfish. Although he isn't bothered by them, I would never leave him alone in the same room with any of them! When we owned rats, one of the rats bit him and he never went near again!
