I'm adopting 2 piggies they are 3 months old and boy and girl, they are supposed to be in separate cages. I have oxbow critical care on hand already. But need more knowledge of how to care for the boy after he gets his manhood taken away. I already have 3 girls that are 4 months old. Happy piggie family!

Hi! Please take the time to read these very detailed and informative guides. They should hopefully answer all your questions. Your boy may need to wait until his testicles have descended; then you are looking at another 6 weeks post-op safety wait before he is 100% safe to go with sows. sepa
Neutered / De-sexed Boars And Neutering Operations: Myths And Facts
Tips For Post-operative Care

Please be aware that boars start making babies from 3-5 weeks and that sows have their first season from 4-6 weeks onwards. If the sow and boar pair you want to acquire are living together, it is most likely that you are dealing with a pregnancy. In this case, please open an ongoing support thread in our pregnancy section and read the relevant guides at the top of the section; they cover the whole period from pregnancy through birth to baby care, sexing and separating baby boars.

Please always double-check the gender of any new arrivals or your own piggies if you have never done so before before you introduce any newbies. Mis-sexing is surprisingly common, as is ignorance about when guinea pigs become sexually mature! Sexing Guide

Every boar will cope differently just as every human copes differently with surgery.
Ensure the vet is good with exotics and you feel confident with them.

I had a boar neutered a few years ago.
He was fine when he came home, eating and drinking normally.
The following day he had a little wobble so following the advice of our vet hospital I kept him warm on my lap, wrapped in a towel on a hot water bottle.
I syringe fed him mushed up pellets? Mushed up banana and water.
After a while he perked up, wriggled free and was fine after that.
He was a very happy boy when he met his 2 new wives.

Keep an eye on your boy and act fast if there is any reason to be anxious.

Hope all goes well and looking forward to pics.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I can't wait to get these little babies today. I already have a vets apt on Saturday. The fuzzy one is the boar and his sister is right next to him. They said they are separated now but that doesn't mean we don't have little ones coming.

WOW there is a lot to know and get ready for. I think I might use a couple days vacation to stay with my babies. I don't even have them yet and I already love them!

When you pick them up, please ask since when they have been separated. ;)

You can keep any single boar next to sows with interaction through the bars to prevent depression during the long wait until he can join the girls. It also makes acceptance easier when the sows know him through the bars. Single boars haven't got another boar to fall out with and fight.

They just can't come together and you need to make sure that a determined boar can't squeeze through or climb over any connecting grids. Boars can amazingly determined and persistent, especially when a sow is coming into season.

Here are our pregnancy guides. We invite any members that are not breeding intentionally to open a specially monitored ongoing support thread throughout a pregnancy and nursing period if a sow of theirs could be potentially pregnant.

Here is our very detailed bonding guide: Bonding: Illustrated Dominance Behaviours And Dynamics
