Hi everybody. Sadly I lost piggles a couple of days ago, leaving Alfie on his own. It’s been about three days now, and I’m starting to look into adopting a buddy for Alfie. I hate seeing him so lonely. I have a few questions. How soon should I get a new pig? Alfie has been pretty quiet but he was always a shy pig so I think he’s starting to feel a bit better about the loss. Should I get another boar? Alfie and piggles were both boars, and seemed to get along quite well. Alfie is desexed. Should I get one a similar age? Alfie is around 2 nearly 2 and a half. Thanks everybody for your wishes and tips xx.

Hi!

I am very sorry for your loss.

Which state are you in? There are some great guinea pig rescues out there where you and Alfie will be in very safe hands as they are all good welfare standard and very experienced. They will pair up Alfie with a friend of his choosing for you for a happy new bond.

These are the ones I can most warmly recommend if you can get to one; you can find them all on Facebook or by googling for the websites. Sorry it is now midnight in the UK and I am about falling asleep in front of the computer).
Queensland:
- QLD Guinea Pig Refuge (North Brisbane and serving North Queensland)
- Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue
New South Wales:
- Cavy Central Guinea Pig Rescue (ACS Sydney)
Victoria:
- Chuffnut Cavies (ACS Melbourne)

Unless a piggy stops eating and drinking in the wake of a sudden loss (acute pining), you usually have about 1-4 weeks to do your research; for a special companion/neutering etc. even a bit longer if it means a real improvement in long term quality of life.

Here is more information on what you can do for Alfie and for yourself: Death, Dying, Terminal Illness, Grieving and Bereaved Companions: Information and Support for Owners and Their Children
