I am traveling this weekend to my sister's house in Philadelphia (another U.S person here lol) and due to me being scared to get another piggy were I live due to the mite issue with Norman I was going to see about getting another one when I am in Philly from an actual pet store. I have been reading about bonding but now I'm more scared to get another male in fear of them not getting along, or when their hormones go crazy and one getting hurt or something. Norm has been the only guinea pig since Easter and he pretty much rules the roost, I consider him like a puppy. Should I still get him a friend?!?!?!

Yes!
You should definitely try and get a friend for your pig as they are much happier that way. Introduce your pig to his friend and carefully monitor their behaviour for the next few days. It should be fine but if not consider housing your pig alone . Hope this helped!

Have you looked to see if there are any good rescues within range of you? Guinea Lynx's list of US rescues includes some in Pennsylvania - though I do realise that US states are huge compared to UK counties, so they could be out of range. Norm would be happier with a friend I'm sure; I too have a boar who has been on his own for 6 weeks and I think he is getting a bit bored on his own.

Yes definitely! :) Generally if pigs have enough space, two of everything and the bonding goes well initially then it’ll normally be fine!

How old is your lovely boy? Sometimes going for an older, calm boar can be the answer so that hormones don’t hit at the same time. It depends so much on the character of piggies which is why a rescue is recommended so he can meet a few boys and see who’s he prefers and gets on with best :)

thanks everyone! @Cavy Kung-Fu Norm is at most 4 months old. Unfortunately there really aren't any rescue places close to me that have small animals :-/

Ah that’s a shame! I know it can be hard to find rescues. Hopefully you’ll find a compatible boy which ever route you go down. It’s clear that you love Norm so another pig will be very lucky to have you!

The only other thing you could do is find a cavy savvy vet and get Norm neutered, you could then find him a wife which should be easier to bond :)

Yes! You should. Guinea pigs are social animals.

Don’t buy from petstores — their pets are often ill or the wrong gender.

Surprisingly, Craigslist sometimes has guinea pigs for adoption! Maybe this could be an option, if there are no rescues? (Sorry if this is considered advertising. I’m just trying to help.)

Definitely buy another guinea pig- guinea pig are herd animals. Consider getting @Cavy Kung-Fu Norm neutered and waiting atleast four weeks then getting a sow, or getting a younger boar. Try as hard as possible to get them from a rescue. Do not get them from a pet shop. I know this is a rescue friendly forum, but are there any REPUTABLE, HOBBY breeders near you. DO NOT go for this unless it is the last resort

You need to wait 6 weeks from neutering before introducing a boar to a sow. I had a surprise shop litter and when my boys were neutered I was extra cautious and waited 8 weeks. I was making sure that no more "surprises" came along!
