Hi everyone,i am one worried mama!My little Starpig is going to the vets on Thursday to be neutured and i thought i would read the sticky about it but now wish i hadnt after hearing all the things that can go wrong after the surgery.
I am having him done after having lots of trouble with him fighting with his paired boar,i have tried all the suggested things so as to keep them together but after a huge fight the other night there is no way this can happen.I have spoken to helen from potteries guines rescue and we have decided to get a little boar for Spongepig and will be getting a girlfriend for Starpig when he is over his operation.
I am hoping everything is going to be ok and that they will all be much happier in the near future!:...

Well my neuter story was a success, my boy came round quickly and recovered really well with no complications or problems, the op doesn't effect the ego though i can tell you that lol. I am sure he will be just fine, he will just need lots of pampering and looking after, regularly monitor the wound, make sure its clean etc etc. Good luck xx

Our two boys were neutered last year too after Benny continuously kept trying to mount his brother Frankie :x It got to the point where I was contemplating splitting them but booked them in with a vet who has a high success rate.
They were only under GA for around 15-20 mins so that made me feel better - I was a nervous wreck and couldn't stop crying though on the morning we dropped them off :...just wanted my babies home with me x)
Post op care is paramount, check the wound at least twice a day for any redness, hot to the touch or inflammation - could be signs of an infection.
Keep them on light coloured bedding so you can see if there is any loss of blood, I bought white mattress protectors and cut them to size.
Keep them on one level, remove any ramps or anything they may try to jump onto etc.
Pop hay into a rack if you have a tray, prevents them sitting in wee and poo thus minimising infection.
Your boys will be ok, piggies are really quite hardy little things :))
Give them lots of cuddles and treats when you get them home - mine just wanted to get back into their pen and snooze but were running around as normal within 24 hours xx>>>
Benny has never been frisky since either and they still live peacefully together :(|)
Good luck for Thursday, it is always a worry for us slaves but we're here to help with any worries you have before and after their ops :)p

The success rate depends very much on the vet and his operating team. In the weeks after a neuter, please be on the lookout for any sudden loss of appetite/weight (weigh daily until he is safe to go to a girl after 6 weeks) and any signs of redness, swelling, signs of pus etc. in the testicle area. Make sure that you see your vet asap as soon as you notice that something is not right.

The good news is that the vast majority of boars make it!

Here are tips for post op care: http://www.guinealynx.info/postop.html

Alternatively, you could consider boar dating both boars at a rescue that offers this service, so each boar could choose his new friend.

Thanks guys its nice to hear about the operations that have gone well!I am very lucky to have Helen and Claire who run our local rescue on the end of the phone and just a short drive away if i am worried about anything,i think they do a fantastic job and just hope i dont drive them too mad worrying about every little thing!x:red

It will all be ok, my boy had no problems and I'm planning on getting a second boar castrated for my Saffy. Dont worry too much. I agree with all that Wiebke has said also.

x.

How about asking the vet to use glue rather than stitches.I know I keep saying this but no one seems to be interested. I have never had post op infections when glue has been used. any one else exreienced gluing?

Hi everyone sorry i have not updated just been to busy worrying!Starpig has had his op and seems not too bad all things concidered. He is eating although not quite as much as normall so i am syringe feeding mashed up nuggets to make sure he is getting enough.Took him back vets the following day and they thought he felt a little warm and his wee seemed strong so is antiotics now and pain relief. Was lovely to see him getting excited this morning when he knew his vegatables were coming!Hopefully will see little improvments in him everyday.
I shall say though that i dont think i would ever have another boar neutured as i dont think my nerves could take it!x

p.s. he had glue not stiches.

Awww, glad he's recovering. :laluot_29:
I know how nerve racking it is when they go in for procedures. Thankfully you've got Helen and Claire close by if you need any help.

There is one thing i was still a little concerned about, the day of his op and the following morning there was poo in his cage but not had any now for nearly 24 hours.I believe they sometimes eat them but every single one?
Anyone an expert on poo?:{
