My Guinea Pigs are out in their run but as soon as I turn my back a cat crawls under the gate and starts stalking round their run. It's happened 4 or 5 times. I know the cat can't actually get them but it can't be nice for the piggies. Going to get them in as its getting dark but really hope the cat is gone tomorrow.

Next time I have an orange I'll try it. Got them inside, only to find a massive spider in their room - I'm having all the luck tonight!

As long as it is a large secure run and you know the cat can't get into it I wouldn't worry too much.

Give your pigs some boxes they can hide under in the center of the run away from the stalking cat and they'll soon learn they're safe from the intruder.

It is annoying I agree. At the moment I think we must be the only house on our estate that doesn't own a cat. Luckily only two individuals seem to regard our garden as their territory. Both of these cats have given up stalking my pigs as they've finally realised that they can't get at them no matter how much time they devote to stalking. I'm always very careful about securing my run and making sure the lid isn't open when I'm transferring the boys and their run furniture in and out.

My brother had our first family set of pigs many years ago now. One of them, Bubble, used to tease the local cat back at home. She knew she was safe and would sit close to the wire of the run whilst the black cat from next door stalked up to her. Then she'd walk slowly round the outside of the run, close to the wire grazing whilst she went, whilst the cat crept along after her. Very funny to watch.

Thanks Tewdric, I have temporarily sorted the problem by blocking the gap underneath the gate with plant pots. The cat hasn't learnt to climb yet. This was after I found it in the garden yet again, even though the piggies weren't there.
Unfortunately it's owner lives in a flat, so my garden is its nearest green space. However like u say, it can't actually get at the piggies, which is the main thing.

cats use our garden as a thoroughfare. They don't bother my guinea pigs at all - but I do have to check the lawn for unwanted deposits.

People aren't meant to have cats or dogs in flats :/ not where I live anyway, but we all know people still have them lol.

Yes, that was my concern last night. I can live with my garden being covered in guinea pig poop but not keen on visitors leaving poops behind too!

A cat leaving deposits on the lawn is a sick cat. Healthy cats will bury them or leave them in/on soil. It's the reason why I have to cover every single flower pot or scrap of soil in my garden.

Deposits on the lawn are more usually hedgehog, fox or stray dogs.

I have loads of cats around my way, seriously over a dozen, and our garden is attractive to them. They poop around the edges near the fence, some sloppy, some good and firm, but always on the grass, not the soil. The sloppy-ones could mean ill cats, but the firm ones? There's a lot of them doing it though..... I have to clear cat poop up most days from the grass. I wish they would go on the soil, it's easier to pick up. It's definitely cats as I see them do it, then I run out like a banshee to scare them off! I genuinely like cats, but the moment they squat on my lawn I'm after them.
Ours is a convenient walkway between terraced houses, so that's why I think the cats all use our garden.

Oddly enough none of them bother the pigs. One once gave a curious look and left, but every time other than that I've seen them walk past as if the pigs are not there.

@Clarey008 I hope this cat gets bored soon and leaves them alone x

Sorry Critter, I didn't see your reply. The good news is I think it has got bored. The guinea pigs have been out in the garden a lot this weekend as it was such nice weather and I only saw the cat a couple of times.

l had thay problem a wile ago and l instaled a PIR motion detector
l have the runs just outside the range of the scan , it worked a treat,
the only thing is to perodicly cheq it for damp as if the bulb blows
it is expensive to replace
also set the light sensetivaty to zero so that it comes on day or night

Orange peel doesn't work against my cats, and I have four, as far as I can work out it doesn't work for most cats, they just arnt bothered.

As for pooing on the grass, again, it doesn't mean that the cats ill it just means it prefers to poo on the grass, especially if the grass is a bit long too. Some cats arnt bothered about covering there poo either.

Your guinea pigs will learn that the cat can't get to them eventually, they probably already know, I wouldn't worry to much, you might actually find that that one cat might deter other more horrible wild/stray cats from sitting around your pigs while there in the run. Mine protect them when I put them out, if any other cat (not one of my own) goes near the run my cats will chase them off :) I'm glad you've managed to deter it for now anyway.

I find my own cat is great for deterring other cats and she is so used to the piggies and them her she doesn't worry them. she has also been know to stalk and pounce on the neighbours cats who dared to stalk the piggies in their runs - so one solution - get a cat? lol! :lol!:

The people opposite me have a multitude of cats who always come over to say hello when I'm sitting out with the piggies. I would never trust them alone, but they've never shown more than a passing interest. My pigs are a bit big and they are small cats though... maybe they look like too much effort!
