Hey

I've read about the calcium:Ph ratio and chosen several foods that I could buy easily and that are healthy for the guinea-pigs too.

Here's the complicated, old version of the diet I had planned:

Monday – Basil, Cabbage, Celery, Asparagus, Carrot

Tuesday – Parsley, Coriander, Pak Choi, Romaine Lettuce, Savoy Cabbage,

Wednesday – Red Cabbage, Rocket, Round Lettuce, Broccoli, Pepper

Thursday - Basil, Cabbage, Celery, Asparagus, Carrot

Friday - Parsley, Coriander, Pak Choi, Romaine Lettuce, Savoy Cabbage,

Saturday - Red Cabbage, Rocket, Round Lettuce, Broccoli, Pepper

Sunday – whatever is left over from the week and some Grapes/Tomatoes/Blackberries or Blueberries

To prevent wastage, would this new diet plan be ok for the guinea-pigs?

Week 1 =
Monday – Basil, Cabbage, Celery, Asparagus, Carrot

Tuesday – same as above

Wednesday – Coriander, Pak Choi, Parsley, Broccoli, Savoy Cabbage

Thursday – same as above

Friday – Red Cabbage, Rocket, Round Lettuce, Pepper, Carrot

Saturday – same as above

Sunday – whatever is left over from the week and some fruit

Week 2 =
Monday – Celery, Coriander, Pak Choi, Romaine Lettuce, Savoy Lettuce

Tuesday – same as above

Wednesday – Basil, Cabbage, Parsley, Broccoli, Pepper

Thursday – same as above

Friday – Red Cabbage, Rocket, Round Lettuce, Asparagus, Carrot

Saturday – same as above

Sunday – whatever is left over from the week and some fruit

Wish I could be as organised :(|)
I buy fresh veggies daily so they all have a good choice - fruit like apples and water/honeymelon are a nice treat for them but only give weekly :)

I'm hugely unconvinced by the Ca:Ph ration thing - I've never seen any real evidence for it. It's one of those things that gets repeated a lot, but not quite sure where it came from. Much like the myth that chinchillas instantly get bloat if you feed them fresh vegetables or that degus can't have fruit because of the sugar (although you still get people who will tell diabetic people that as well mallethead).

Guinea pigs do need much of their diet to be hay or grass, rather than vegetables though as it wears the teeth correctly - so too much of the diet as vegetables isn't great. I limit pellets, but they do contain things like vitamin D that guinea pigs need and don't really get from vegetables or hay.

PAulag, so would you say more hay, and a small amount of pellets? And just a few additional veggies?

Thank you for your replies.

I plan to give the piggies a cup of veggies each per day, with 5 different types of veg/greens in. They will also have unlimited pellets (I read this is what they should have?) and unlimited hay.

Unlimited pellets is only for babies and young piggies if yours are adults they only need about a teaspoon each per day if they are getting loads of veggies and unlimited hay
