just a quick re cap a few weeks back gideon choked and then developed breathing problems and pneumonia he was given a weeks course of anti biotics (baytril) he's now having breathing problems again vet wants to prescribe baytril again so just a quick question
will it work? as i was thinking seeing how it didn't work last time that a different drug might work better.
any suggestions and please pray for my little man.

I saw your post and thought OH NO :'( poor little guy he's been thru too much :'(
I'm sure one of the girls will be on real soon that will help you sorry i can't but i'm sending huge cyber vibes for him and you to help :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Let us know how he goes at the vets.... will keep our paws crossed for you love :-* :-*

thank you i was a bit better prepared for the warning signs this time and rushed him to the vets straight away so he's not as bad as he was last time but that could change vet have him in an oxygen tent and hopefully i'll have him home tonight but i'll keep you all posted
thank you for the vibes

O0 O0 mummies always know, just sometimes we just can't read the signs and it's hard to put your finger on the problem :( :(
Yes i'll be keeping an eye on his thread, come on little man you can do it O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

On no not again, poor little Gideon and poor you. I am sure he will make a full recovery. You could enquire about Septrin/Bactrim. Thinking of you and little Gideon. :)

just another question what do you think will have caused the problem this time i've been keeping him warm and he's an indoor piggy any reason why he's developed breathing difficulties again?

There could be a number of reasons. To be hones if he had pneumonia, I don't believe a weeks course of antibiotics would totally clear that up. How much antibiotics was he prescribed the last time? :)

I would definatly enquire about a different treatment, One of my sows developed respiratory problems after an anasthetic (i really think there is a connection) Baytril really didn't help at all, we eventually lost her to a heart attack, after weeks of antibiotics, since then I've read something about baytril not being great for younger piggies (she was 6 months). Not sure how true that is.
It wouldn't hurt to enquire.
Hope he gets better soon.
X Paula

Baytril isn't great for younger guineas, when they say young guineas they mean babies. :)

last time i was only given a weeks course of anti biotics and to take him for a check up where they said his chest was fine i asked them to make sure e.g with more anti biotics but they said one week was enough he's just past 6 months and we're lucky to have got him there to be homest not sure how much more he can take especially as vet has just called and told me his heart is in difficulty what ever that means have an appointment with vet tonight so i have all my fingers crossed

I don't think that a weeks worth of antibiotics for pneumonia was not a long enough course. I have my fingers crossed so tight they are going numb. I don't really like the sound of what the vet has said. Think about all possibilities now and what you think is best. How guinea savvy is your vet? :)

aww so sorry hugs to you both. Thinking of you.

I agree that the course of antibiotics wasn't long enough especially to be cleared of pneumonia. I would definitely ask for Septrin :)

We've not had those problems before, but just from my experience antibiotics just like us humans needs to be taken for 10 days to actually do some good :-\
Awww gee hope all goes well for Gideon, sending more of these to help love :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Sending loads of kisses to the little love :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

ok just to let you all know gideon is still very poorly he has been given x-rays and such and his lungs are full of fluid which the vet has drained and has been prescribed a 2 week course of septrin this is a new one to me any side effects i should look for? but he is doing alright his heart is fine although it is under quite a bit of strain have my wee man home and resting keeping him warm but the next couple of days are crucial if the anti biotics don't show much improvement by monday the vet thinks there may be something more sinister wrong so lets just hope he'll improve over the weekend.
my vet is wonderful really knows what he's talking about last vet gideon saw was just a locum so thats why the dose and course of anti biotics was wrong thank you for all you're support

So happy to hear a vet who sounds fairly guinea savvy has treated Gideon. Septrin is fine and completely safe for guineas, it normally works better then Baytril. Keep us updated with his progress, keeping my fingers crossed for the little fellow. O0

well already there is a marked improvement ok not out of woods yet but he's managing to popcorn abit and wheeking full stop (considering he couldn't breathe yesterday i think thats great) hopefully he'll pull through again this time

I am so pleased for both you and Gideon. Hopefully he will make a full recovery this time. :smitten: Do you think Gideon might have a low immune system or something that makes him more susceptible to illness? :)

I would phone Vedra at CCT and ask for her advice on meds for fluid on the lungs. Theres more than this that can be done :)

paws and fingers crossed :smitten:

thats one of the tests that has been carried out we're awaiting the results but his immune system could be low

Even though I still think he should have been given a longer course of antibiotics the first time, it seems that he does get ill quite easily and when he is ill he is very ill. Let us know what the test results are. O0

Re: gideon is ill again low immune system

ok as we were expecting (or at leats i had a hunch) the test results have showed that gideon has a very low immune system
vet can't pin point the exact cause but i have been sent home to have a think about what to do next any help and advice would be welcome obviously i want to give him a chance i'm just wondering if this is the best option? what are his chances? etc anyone had this before
HELP i'm so confused ?

I wouldn't consider getting him pts. Hopefully he will get a stronger immune system when he gets older. So the only thing I can suggest is keeping him in the cleanest environment possible, washing you hands before picking him up and so on. Then just keep an eye out for illness. What has the vet said on the issue? :)

vet said that his immune system could improve and it might just be because he's had to fight off 2 infections so close together vet has talked drug treatment but as you said i've just to keep him claen and wash my hands etc thing that worries me is quality of life obviously going to give my little man a fighting chance but if it gets to the stage where he's spending more time at the vets than at home then i'll consider pts but hopefully thats worst case scenario and once i'm a bit better informed i can manage his condition well

I agree this poor little man could be doing this for a long time on and off ABs, if you dont get to the bottom of why its happening again good luck with the septrin and ring and ask Vedras advice

Find out all you can, phoning this Vedra wouldn't do any harm. I have had very little exprience with guineas with a low immune system and they ones I have had exprience with, their immune systems have become stronger with age. However, steps have had to be taken such as keeping the environment clean and washing hands before handling to keep these guineas from falling ill. :)
