Hey guys,

So ginger went in for his neuter today but they we're very busy with an emergency and he didn't have the op til 2 and we got told we could pick him up at 6.30 because they wanted to check him he was eating and drinking.

Since I've got him home and transferred him in his sleeping bag to his cage he hasn't moved much at all. The vet said he is fine and he's eaten a lot of veggies and drunk and been going to the toilet like normal but back at home he's not touched a thing just stayed in his sleeping bag.

I gave them a tupper wear box of veggies and all she gave me back was 3 bits of cucumber

We've been prescribed metacam for pain relief and an antibiotic called marbocyl 1% San Inj for four days starting tomo and we have to take him back in two days time.

I'm just worried cos he won't come out or move much, do you think he's okay?

Thanks in advance!

:(

It is OK; give him a couple of days to recover from his op and anaesthetics! Make sure that you weigh him daily for the next few days. Check on him once during the night to make sure he is OK; very rarely guinea pigs can gnaw into new operation wounds. As he has eaten so well at the surgery, I wouldn;t worry too much.

Thanks so much Wiebke,

I'm a little less worried now...

Thankfully I've got that linked booked marked and I'll have a good read through it again, I think I'm just really anxious and worried for him.

I'll make sure to weigh him daily and check the site but i think tonight I'll let him be?

I normally wake up in the middle of the night but I'll set an alarm just in case, he's in my bedroom right next to my bed so I'll keep an eye on him. My mums off tomo as well so she'll keep coming in and checking on him.

Thankfully i don't have to be at work til 11 tomo so i can be with him in the morning.

Thank you!

I would let him be; he will hopefully at some point wake up and be ready for a little treat.

Depending on the GA, his poos can be a bit on the funny side for the first day after an op as all the chemicals work through the digestive tract. It is not something to worry about.

Thank again Wiebke,

I value your info because your so full of knowledge and experience!

Peppa took about a week to really be a guinea pig again after his latest operation, he really doesnt do well with GA at all though.

Hope you perk up soon Ginger x

Churchill was rather subdued for a couple of days after his op and took a while to be back to his bouncy self. We had a slight complication with his post op care but he took it in his stride. I'm sure Ginger is just feeling a little sorry for himself and will feel better in a day or so once the drugs have had a chance to ware off.

Hope Ginger feels more comfortable soon x

Hey guys,

Ginger is a tiny bit perkier but he won't eat unless i hand feed him, he just ignores it and leaves in his cage. My mum tried but he doesn't take it from her, so I've swapped my shift over so i can keep him eating as the vet stressed it's really important he eats.

Hopefully by the end of today he will be eating by himself. He's had a handful of dandelions and cucumber and some more lettuce.

He hasn't eaten any pellets yet he just won't take them.

We have to give him his medicine at midday so we'll see how that goes.

Thanks for asking it means a lot!

:)

Always try the solid food before you hand feed; at least he is eating something, so that is a good sign! Ideally, you aim to get about 120ml in fluids and solids into him over the course of 24 hours, but it can be a struggle with a piggy off food; little but often works better in these cases. Make sure that you syringe 1ml water for every 5ml of food to keep him hydrated.
As an encouragement - hand feeding can be a real battle, but it can make all the difference in the recovery, so it is well worth it!

Has your boy got some metacam you can give him for today?

Yup we have metacam 0.15ml once a day and some antibiotics for the next 4 days.

We just gave him his metacam and he was really good and took it all in, we got told no to give him antibiotic until half two by the vet so we'll give him that a bit later.

When we gave it to him we put it in the side of his mouth and waited until he chewed and then push it in his mouth as we didn't want to choke him.

I just ground up and mashed up some pellets for him and he ate about a third of a table spoon but I'll keep trying with him to see how much he'll eat and gave him some water in the syringe but he wouldn't drink a lot and spat some back at me, but I'll try again with it when he's rested a little as i don't want to stress him out.

I also hand feed him bits of hay as he was ignoring it other wise, he ate lots of that!

I don't have any critical care, is mashed up pellets okay?

Thank you Wiebke

Mushed up pellets are fine short term IMHO. For Peppa it was only when I started giving fibreplex that his stomach and eating started to become more normal :-)

Thanks Bekki, he had a little wander round his cage after his metacam and now he's having a rest but he's looking a little brighter, so fingers crossed if i keep this up he'll be okay when i go to work tomo, my mum can check on him but she can't be in all day tomo.

Hey everyone!

We took ginger for his 2 day check up today, it was different nurse but she was just as nice and she gave us a top up of his medicines.

She said the stitches look really good and no abscess was forming and he was hydrated well but he's lost a little weight.

I told her he wasn't really eating his pellets or drinking much, she said to keep feeding him veggies and if he's not eating pellets on his own by Saturday to take him back and they could give him something to make him more comfortable and that we should keep giving him water so he stays hydrated but ideally he should drink from his bottle again.

I asked he about feeding him critical care so she said not to because we need him to get back to his normal eating habits as quickly as possible.

Other than that she was very happy, she also suggested to put him on newspaper and meadow hay rather towels because then he has instant food supply round him to nibble on and sometimes towels even when changed daily ( i told her we'd been changing him twice a day) can hold bacteria. We will still change his cage daily.

So when we got back i changed his cage and he nibbling away and made a little nest, he's eating his dinner veggies and i bought him his favourite pellets, the blackcurrant and oregano excel.

So fingers crossed we're on the path to him being better.

:)

Great news ... well done you and Ginger.. xx

Hey everyone,

I bring good news...

Ginger seems to be mostly back to himself today he's had a great appetite and is drinking from his water bottle again as we we're quite worried because he just wouldn't drink we we're having to give him water with a syringe, the operation site looks clean and neat, we have one more dose of pain killer and antibiotics for him tomo and then hopefully fingers crossed he'll be fine!

He has lost a bit of weight over these few days, 53g, so I've bought him some alfalfa hay blocks to hopefully give him a little boost and now he's appetite is there he should start gaining again.
