Hi All,
Nervous first time piggy owner here :o) I think we are doing ok, just wanted to run a few things past you!
The girls (poor little things have been nameless so far, but I think we have settled on Pudding (right of avatar) & Treacle!) arrived on Sunday - Monday and Tuesday saw some serious squabbling but they appear heaps better the last two nights, so that worry has about passed. The odd little chunter at each other but no rumblestrutting or chasing off any more.
I am nervous of handling them as I never have before, and they are obviously nervous too, I am not rushing it and if it takes a bit longer than a few days then so be it, if that is what they want. Both will eat from me and sniff my hand - this is good right? Hopefully they are beginning to trust me. Pudding will let me stroke her nose / head quite happily now. I actually had her sat on my lap for 5 minutes tonight (didn't want her to feel stressed so kept it short). I don't think I can "catch" them to pick them up yet, without them running away, but she went into her snuggle-oo so I just picked that up, popped her on my lap, chatted away to her an the odd like stroke on her head, left her in her snuggle-oo though, thought short and sweet for the first time. My first piggy snuggle!
Food - not quite sure how much I should be feeding? Should the nugget bowl always have something in it? Would this be a reasonable routine - bowl of nuggets and handful of fresh hay each morning, a few veg's at lunch time or first thing, and more veg's in the evening? I also tend to give the odd bit as a treat to get them used to me - I will just go and sit with them and give them some parsley (that is a BIG hit!) or greens. I do the big hay change in the evening. So far both of their favorites appear to be cauliflower leaves - not at all impressed with broccoli!
They have come from a rescue and were in a hutch outside with other pigs - they were vet checked on arrival at the rescue, do I need to worry about mites or anything? Have seen them scratching a bit but we all get itches, wouldn't say it's excessive.
Currently using fleece with puppy pads underneath - been reading on here and may get some towels as a middle layer.
Oh, and both of them have wheeked at me to demand some veg's - just the sweetest sound
Does it sound like we are doing ok? Sorry for the essay - just want to make sure I am doing right by them.
