When I came home from work yesterday I noticed a real change in their behaviour. There had gone back to being very nervous, like we were back at day 1 again! We had just got them used to us and picking them up etc. Now the girls both seem different. They both keep kicking their back legs and doing a funny jump thing and shaking their bodies.
I'm really worried about them! They keep scratching themselves also so wondered if they have mites? Can anyone advise me?
Just send my husband out to buy some spot on - will it hurt to use it anyway?

Thanks Emma

I would have your girls checked for mites.

The other thing is actually a VERY good thing - your girls are what we call "popcorning" out of sheer joy! Which means that they are settling in really well!

Thanks, does having mites make them quieter then?

also another quick question, can they have too much grass?

Sorry I'm so new to all of this

thanks Emma

Hi Emma,

I agree that treating for mites is worthwhile, if they're scratching quite a bit it can suggest mites and may also explain the change in behaviour and being a bit tetchy/jumpy and not liking being handled.

Grass should be introduced to the diet slowly as it can be a bit rich on tums that aren't used to it, I tend to start them off with 15 minutes a day outdoors on the grass and increase it to half an hour a week later. Then gradually build up the length of time they're allowed out to whatever you're aiming for. If you are picking grass for them or feeding dried-grass, start with just a very small handful once a day, it can then be increased to a couple of large handfuls over a period of a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your advice:)
We treated them both for mites last night and seem much happier today. Also have kept them inside, will let them out for a while tomorrow to see how they are. They don't seem as scared today, and even had a nice lap time with both eating parsley on my daughters lap. Feel so much happier now!
Thanks again Emma

Mites can definately make them antsy and itchy so you've done the right thing by treating them.

Your girls sound very well cared for :)
