So some of you may know Bubble and Squeak are on a magic piggie potion for a week.

The vet told me to add the medicine into their water. 2ml per 100ml of water. (Something like that, I can't quite remember without reading the bottle)

Is this a good thing too do? Doesn't the water dilute the medicine? Surely I can't guarantee they are getting the correct amount of medicine they need?

I've also noticed my pigs don't drink an awful lot of water anyway, because they get a lot from veggies.

Would you recommend giving the medicine directly into the mouth?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, I've just never heard of giving medicine through water!

it's not a good way to give medicine, for the reasons you've said. it doesn't sound like your vet is exotics/guinea savvy so i'd definitely switch to another. :)

Yeah I would be concerned with that method too, how can you gaurantee that they have got what they needed? Perhaps give them a call in the morning and ask them how to give it orally without the water bottle?

You will need to give it by syringe but I would think the vet would need to tell you the dose. Putting it in the water is very ineffective.

Water intake with guinea pigs varies enormously individually anyway, but consumption goes down further if anything is added to water. You have been likely prescribed baytril, which is still the only licensed antibiotic for guinea pigs and about the most vile tasting substance you can imagine! No self-respecting guinea pig will ever drink it! Many general vets who have not much experience with small animals are unfortunately not aware of this, or the fact that guinea pigs have a high metabolism.

Medicine needs to be syringed for best effect when it comes to guinea pigs. Antibiotics should be bolstered by giving a probiotic 1-2 hours after to prop up the guts. Please ring up the clinic and ask what the correct dose is for syringing.

We have got a piggy savvy UK vet locator on the top bar. Perhaps one of them is within your reach?

Thankyou very much guys. I'm at the vets with the bunnies today, so I will ask about the pigs while I'm there!

I will check the locator and find the closest vets on there :D

I hope there isn't anything wrong with your bunnies?
