Hi just wondering if I could get a second opinion as I have already been to the vets and I'm not sure. Although worth noting that he has been good previoulsy with my pigs.
I noticed that in the corner of gizmos left eye there was some crustiness and after cleaning it with some warm water the crustiness came away with little tufts of hair. Naturally concerned I took him to the vet to get it checked out.
The vet said he had a mild case on conjuctivitus for which he prescribed eye drops.
Whilst at the vet the vet gave him a thorough examination and discovered a large mass on his left side. He advised it could be his kidneys, spleen or liver but hard to tell without an x-ray. He did say that whatever it is its too large to do anthing about and as Gizmo seems happy & eating etc at the moment to just monitor him, and if he stops eating or is in pain to bring him back and they will euthanize him.
I would point out at this point that Gizmo is an old boy now, and had various health issues over the past few months and has some bad days and some good days, although in the last few weeks he has perked up considerably and his eating habits are back to normal etc.
However whilst at the vets the vet also noticed a large bald patch on the underside of his belly. Its not red or flaky just quite literally bald. I felt quite bad about this as I must confess I hadn't noticed despite regular handling and he is out for cuddles everyday!
I asked the vet specifically if this was a fungal problem and the vet said no this was more than likely due to his illness and the lump, perhaps hormonal or something to do with his adrenal gland.
I am aware that he is ill and old and I try to keep him as comfortable as possible, but I am concerned that I havent heard of guinea pigs losing hair unless it is fungal/mites and so I wondered if anyone else here has had a similar problem.
I am just wondering if I should treat him for a fungal problem anyway just to be on the safe side, or if that will just stress hium out more.
Thanks for any advice.
