Hi guys

Its been ages since I posted on here... sorry been busy with work and getting married.

I got gizmo out of his cage this afternoon for a cuddle and there is a really big lump on his back right leg that has a open hole on it.

I have got him in at the Vet's for 4.30 this afternoon as I think it looks like an abscess I could see some white gunk in the hole.

Just wondering what peoples experiences are with this sort of problem and if it will be life threatening. The last time I had to take a piggy to the vet they gave him anesthetic and he died 2 days later.

8...

Aw, poor Gizmo - always a worry when you find something :(
Please don't let your previous experience influence you but he will likely need some antibitoics and the 'abcess' flushed.
Sending healing vibes and hugs to you - keep us posted x>>
Congrats on your marriage too :(|)
One of my older girls has a small cyst on her back and the vet said to leave well alone but keep an eye on it incase it does get bigger...so far...so good :)

I'm sitting here on pins waiting for 4.30 to come.

I'm taking him to a different vets this time. My friends bunny has stasis and they have been treating him over the weekend so hopefully they will be better than my last guinea pig vet experience

Just brought Gizmo back from the vet. The abscess is quite solid so they were unable to drain it.

They gave him some antibiotics, anti inflammatory and pain killers.

Got to take him back in the morning for a lumpectomy so the anesthetic that I didn't want him to have is happening.

Thankfully as its on his leg its hasn't affected any organs, he hasn't lost any weight and is eating well so I'm just praying that he survives this operation.

Theo had that procedure done awake. He got some numbing cream though. I would discuss the possibility with your vet. If the vet is good they will happily discuss reasons and give * the for and against

Thanks hazeyg. I told them today that I didnt want him under but they said it was necessary.

I'll have another chat when I take him in, in the morning. He is such a docile guinea pig anyway that he wouldn't be any fuss if he was awake.

Aw, not the answer we were hoping to hear :(
Good luck for his op tomorrow - any surgery with GA is risky but sure he will be fine and home in no time :)
Stock up with lots of treats to pamper him with ;)

The lump is not something that I'm too worried about because of the location, it is the GA that petrifies me.

Gizmo is chilling in his cage at the moment - I dont blame him as the lad has has 4 needles in him today! Nigel is also being a good buddy and cwtching up next to him.

Do you think it would be a good idea to take Nigel to the vets with him tomorrow so he has his friend there for support. They have been together since we got them 3 years ago and really love each other.

I always think it helps them recover better - imagine having the one person you love the most there for you after surgery...:)
A lot of vets encourage it so I'd take Nigel along, can you take him in another carrier so Gizmo can see and smell him? Maybe let him come around from the GA for a couple of hours before putting them together ?/

I have a cat carrier for my cat as well as a guinea pig carrier so can easily take them both, plus the cat carrier is a bit more roomy.

Just gave all the pigs some lettuce and Gizmo scoffed it down and stole Nigel's as per usual so thats a good sign. He hasn't been up to the hay loft since he has been back tho so think i'll put some on a plate downstairs for him.

Thought I would add a photo of the area so more experienced members can advise if they think the lump can be removed without GA.

Please note it did not look this bad when I took him to the vet earlier, this is from the vet squeezing the lump to try and remove it. He hardly flinched when she was squeezing it so hopefully he isn't in too much pain.

Update post Op on Gizmo

I have just brought Gizmo home today. After a lot of research on the internet I went with the GA as I wanted to get him well as soon as possible rather than delay his treatment.

The removed a large benign growth from his leg about 1 and a half inches! He has coped with the GA brilliantly. Is really perky and looks his usual self. He scoffed down the parsley I gave him at the vets and is now happily munching on some hay.

The stitches look really neat and I'm pleased with the work the surgeon has done. I will try to get a picture up later

Just need to closely monitor him now to make sure he doesnt bite through them and that the area doesnt become infected.

He has a course of baytril to take and a check up at the vets on Saturday.

Have to say I feel so relived that he is OK, I know he isn't out of the woods yet but all signs are looking positive.
