Has anyone come across this hormone treatment for ovarian cysts? Was it successful? Lilly is booked in for first injection (of two) tomorrow.

It's not a name I have come across, the only injections I have experience of are Chorulon. Hopefully Abi will know.

Oh well, number 1 injection done, Vet scanned her again - the cysts don't seem to have grown very much but apparently she was a bit tender on her tummy. Next injection in 2 weeks time. Fingers crossed!

We don't generally advise the hormone implant to be honest as not all cysts will respond to them and they will often still need them draining and sometimes still be uncomfortable with them, therefore we advise spaying as the goldstandard treatment. I have not heard of receptil, however gnrh is the general name for most of the common implant. Hope she makes some improvements.

Thank you Abi-nurse. I understood for this treatment to be purely injections. Implants haven't been mentioned at all. I'm now rather confused!

Ah ok. They must be injections of the hormone, rather than the implant itself, so it must be that the injections just keep the drug in the body. (Rather than the implant is like a 'slow release' type thing)

Hope you see some improvement. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Thank you. Here's hoping!

Sorry no idea, my old girl ellie had the chorulon (hcg) injections the same as Helen mentioned.
But these were very successful for her.
She had 2 sessions (approx 1yr apart)of 2 jabs (7-10days apart)
Her lump went down quickly her heavy bleeding&uti's stopped within a few days  her general health, mood improved&even her hair looked shinier &healthier :))

Hope Lilly has a speedy recovery &the injections work for her. :)

Luv the girls &I. Xx

Thank you so much for that. She seems quite bright this morning despite not making it out into the garden - again. (Enough rain for the moment!) So pleased the treatment was successful for Ellie. Here's hoping for a good outcome for Lilly x

Hello. Just thought I'd update the saga of Lilly. She had her second injection two weeks ago and not having noticed any difference at all, I was a little apprehensive! We went ahead though and the vet warned me it would probably take a couple of months for her coat to grow back. Well, two weeks down the line there is the start of a downy covering - it moves against my fingernail! Soo pleased. We have to go back for another scan fairly soon to see what's going on inside, but she seems much perkier - even a big stetch and yawn this morning on the way out to the day quarters! Here's still hoping - fingers and toes crossed!

My 4 year old sow crunchie was diagnosed with ovarian cysts several months ago. She had several small follicular cysts resembling a bunch of grapes, so nothing in the way of fluid to drain really, but they where having a huge impact on her. She became increasingly hormonal/aggressive to her cagemates until she had to be seperated fully. Her abdomen was tender, she passed discharge as well as recurring UTIs. She had the GnRH (Gonadotrophin releasing hormone) injections 2 weeks apart. This is the same compound thats in the implants @Abi_nurse you are right, just simply in injection form as u said.

48 hours after first injection and she became more settled, and gradually became more friendly to her cagemates and stopped mounting them, so she was reunited. She was doing well and the cysts actually reduced and the ovaries looked better a couple months after.

But she still had ongoing symptoms of slow guts/gassy guts and it was decided that her uterus (which was found to be diseased looking when scanning cysts before injections) was causing her ongoing problems. She ended up being spayed and 13 days later shes doing grand!

They certainly worked for what they where aimed at, and id use them again in another piggy if the situation arose.

All the best

Hi guys, with your poor sows that had ovarian cysts. Did you notice whether they had any respiration problems, difficulty walking/reduced mobility or very much in pain looking?

I'm sorry to keep going on but my Yogi is worrying me like crazy, I think she is putting a little weight on but I don't know whether the vet will operate on her cos she seems to be in pain and has problems breathing.

She is very gasey too, I think maybe the cyst is pushing on her digestive system? I'm giving her 1m olive oil daily which seems to help with her pooing. She is pooing tear drops most of the time. The gut stuff she's been prescribed seems to not work very well on it's own probably down to the gas build up.

Just want my little girl to be happy again

When my Millie had cysts she was very gassy. We used to give her Gripe water which did seem to help and we sat her on the massage pad and made sure that she had plenty of fluids. I have also heard of pigs having respiratory issues too. If you are worried I would go back to the vet, they may want to try the draining and injections first if she is struggling.

My sow got bloat regularly with her cysts. She was on 1ml metocloprimide twice a day which helped massively with poo output and gas. She also walked with a gait and had a painful abdomen. She was better after her gnrh injections, but had to be spayed in the end as ber uterus was very nasty looking. Is your sow going from treatment? U should get loxicom for the pain also and remove any bridges so shes not trying to climb/jump x

Been a while coming back on as wanting to download recent pictures of Lilly. For what it's worth and this is my experience only: before the injections Lilly had large bald patches on both sides of her tummy, crusty nipples and, when I picked her up , she made quite a lot of fuss and noise. The 2nd injection was on 8th September(3 1/2 weeks ago) and within a few days the crustiness had gone. The vet advised that, IF it worked, it may take up to 2 months for her hair to grow back. It started within a fortnight and now (hence wanting to download photos) her sides are well covered and the squeaking when picked up is more of a happy piggy. (I've never actually had a vet tell me that I'd made her week!) I'll take camara pics tomorrow and post as can't seem to download off new phone! One other thing, before the injections, her poos were very small and dry - they seem ok now as well, and her wee was quite pinky - that's more normal now as well, most of the time. Can't think of anything else at the moment. Not taking anything for granted but things seem to be going the right way at the moment.
I really hope you have success with little Yogi, Katie 1988, fingers crossed x
p.s. thinking about it, right at the beginning, she didn't move about very much at all. She was a very unhappy little piggy.
