Hello, I'm 15, 16 in 26 days now ")

I'm planning on putting an application in to Duchy College, Stoke Climsland,
I don't think i've ever been more nervous about anything in my life, i don't know anyone there and all my friends are staying at school for 6th form, the course I'm applying for is equivalent to 3 A-levels.
Its only 3 days a week, but I'm very shy when it comes to new people and I'm worried this will ruin the whole experience for me even thought the course seems like the dream for me.

Heres the course :

has anyone on here ever been to duchy college ?
anyone have any recommendations to calm nerves ?
anyone taken an animal care diploma like this one ?

just any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Most of the people starting your course will probably not know anyone, and you will all have a common interest in animals so I bet you will make loads of new friends!

I agree with Raven, you will all be able to break the ice by talking about animals all day :)

My little sister has just gone back to college to do an Animal Management course, she is 22 so not only did she not know anyone she is also a few years older than most as she did A levels, then started working at various places but nothing was what she wanted. Her course sounds amazing. She's off to Africa in February for a few weeks to work on various things. She gets to visit local-ish zoo's and wildlife areas, and she is also going to Heathrow airport to check out their animal transporting area. I'm so jealous and wish I had done something like this.

You are bound to be nervous but you will enjoy it so much, it will be worth some nerves :)

Just try your best :) When I started my course in September I didn't know anybody lol. And then our teachers through us all in the deep end and gave us 'team building' exercises which really put me to the test simply because I have a tendency to be so quiet and shy. But I sort of just pushed and forced myself to try and talk and say hi and everything and I made loads of friends :) it was nice. I was sort of known as being chilled out and quiet and even got the nickname Luna Lovegood :{ lol. But unfortunately I had to leave :( I miss everyone there.

But what I am trying to say is just to relax and. A lot of people are in the same boat as you :) Don't expect too much fro yourself if you are shy. Just smile and be friendly and have general chit chat about stuff. I have noticed people tend to talk about what schools you came from and how old you are and everything :) I am sure it will be fine. I knew a few people that went to Dutchy and they say it is good there :D Good luck

Team building exercises are probably the thing i dread the most out of the whole thing !

I'm hoping it will be all good, i guess everyones shy at first right ?

Try being blindfolded and having to be lead around by a stranger :)) but it wasn't too bad just have fun with it :) When I was first put in my 'team' none of us spoke at all until one got brave enough to ask names lol

I do a HND animal care course i'm not sure if thats basically the same course or not but its really good and we get to do practical work every week where we handle all different animals like rabbits, gerbils, rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, snakes, lizards and outdoor animals too :) its really good and when i started no one new any one else either but you make friends quickly! i am 18 and the people in my class range from like 17 to 40 :-)

I'm the same age as you, and i've got a place in a college near me for the same course as you! (I've got a place if i get my grades). I had a interview and it's fine, people are really nice. I'm scared of starting in September...but i'm sooo excited! As there's reptiles, rodents, birds, donkeys etc.

I guess once we settle in, we will be fine. Like High school! Someone i saw there said there's all ages and everyone loves & is interested in the same things. So good luck!

I'm doing the same course that you're taking and it's brilliant. I absolutely love it, and I didn't know anyone when I started but I made friends quickly because we all have the same interest in animals so it gave us something to talk about. Mine is also only 3 days a week but I have a lot of assignments so the 2 extra days at home are better to get work done. I was really scared before I went to college and I even thought about not going at all but I'm so glad I did because it's great. I don't go to the college you're planning to go to but if you have any more questions about the course feel free to PM me, I don't know loads but if I can help in any way I will :)

I was in a similar situation as you, started college 2/ 3 months ago(?) now and honestly it isn't as bad as you think. I've gone to a college with a small group of friends from secondary so I was always going to be fine during breaks but the subjects I was taking on my own so I was really worried I wouldn't make friends and be my own when we were doing experiments :0 but it's fine when you get there and start making friends. You get to talking about random things and find your actually really similar and you've got the added bonus of knowing you already have something in common: love animals. Just like you though everyone will be in the same situation and the teachers will know this and get you working together. Just push yourself and asking each others names is always a good start lol. Don't worry about it, just enjoy yourself :(|).

Thanks for all the posts, i can't wait to finally put an application in and start a new adventure i guess XD !

I am on the exact same course at duchy!

I'm in my second year of level 3 and was exactly the same when i started, i was really nervous, but on enrolement day, i spoke to the person in front of me and we are still friends now :)

You should love it there, it is very daunting at first, but with a little time, you will feel right at home.

If there is anything you need to know about the course or the college, feel free to ask :)

i live like 10 mins down the road so i get the bus
