Going Totally Off Burgess, Disappointed!

After reading so many threads on people finding dogs kibbles in their guinea pigs' pellets all these years... Urgh, I found one!

Too bad I forgot to take a picture before I dumped it-- It's a yellowish, square kibble, which I've seen someone posted it before!

I am so glad my current pigs are now on Oxbow in the morning and Burgess at night... Guess it's all Oxbow now!

I literally found one in mine last week too! It was orange and definitely some type of dog food! Gross...I want to invest in a different one now too but Oxbow is hard/expensive to get in the UK :(
Any one know of P@H pellets are any good!?

Selective pellets are the best in my opinion, they have loads of vitamin c.
I mix them in with excel and pets at home and my piggies eat the selective ones first!
Selective is cheaper too.

I did used to use the Science Selective ones but they got bored of them and go crazy for the Excel. I would consider moving them back but because the first ingredient is Alfalfa I was also worried they were too high in calcium? :/
 
The only reason I feed them is my piglets go just for them and refuse to eat any other pellets. They also have really shiny coats because of them.
This is only my opinion. :)

I may try them again... :) Just annoying about the Excel as they do love them, they need to sort out their quality control lol
 
My guinea pigs like Science Selective.

@helen105281 is our expert on pellets .

I have tried to wean my guinea pigs on to some of the preferable brands - but they have turned their noses up when I have introduced Bunny Guinea Pig Dream, Vitakraft and JR Grainless. Sorry Helen . ( Why am I apologising ? - it should be my Guinea Pigs apologising !)

I recently switched from Harringtons to P@H and the boyz seem to enjoy them. (The Harringtons were having problems with size of pellet, and some bags were far too small)
 
I am working on a sticky (sorry Wiebke still not quite finished) which lists all that are available in the UK. I tend to recommend the grainless ones as mine are doing well on them but appreciate that it can be hard to wean the pigs onto them. I think sticking with Oxbow for now is your best bet, and maybe give JR Farms a chance at some point and see if they like that? they are much much bigger than Oxbow pellets though which I know are tiny. JR Farms do a small bag for about a fiver on Zooplus which you could use as a taster.

It's very different here! And Burgess is more expensive than Oxbow here because all requires shipping over-- Maybe that's why Oxbow is more expensive than Burgess in your country; As Oxbow needs to be shipped in too?

I've seen Supreme Science Selective... Was considering it, but it's verrrrrrrrrrrry expensive here (Like 3x the price of my Oxbow!), and it's alfafa based right?

I concur... It's so risky if you're feeding them in the morning and you didn't realize the difference! What if there are dogs' kibbles the same colour of the Guinea pigs' pellets...?

My one and a half year old loves Bunny Guinea Pig food. He used to have Pets at Home and Excel pellets. But I read @helen105281 information on guinea pig foods and decided to give it a go. Now over a year on Amos absolutely loves it. He is at the bars of his cage waiting for me on a morning. As soon as I put his bowl in he eats them all. I have had to restrain myself from giving him more than the recommended amount of 5 a day. He is a healthy happy guinea pig and judging by the sounds of his wheeking his lungs are super healthy as well. It is expensive but it goes a long way.

the grainless ones have made such a difference with mollie and benjie aswell. they have a small amount of vitakraft and absolutely love them. they also look much healthier for having no 'normal' pellets aswell to be honest.

benjie was a nightmare to wean off the pellets he came to us on - harringtons. took us months to wean him down. it was honestly like he was addicted to them! but we managed to switch him to oxbow eventually which he liked, and then the vet recommended one of the newer concept ones if i wanted to feed any (because of mollie's bladder issue and benjie being prone to weight gain), but luckily they both took to vitakraft instantly!

anyone wanting to change, keep trying because sometimes it can take months but it's worth it i think because my two do look/seem so much better for it :)

i think all pellets are alfalfa based apart from oxbow which are timothy hay based and the grainless ones recommended :)

Ahh I thought Excel wasn't as the first ingredient said Grass not Alfalfa but I guess it doesn't specify which type of grass. It's so hard lol I just can't afford Oxbow at the mo with 5 piggies. When I get a full time job then hopefully I can switch :)

I was trying to shift my guinea's from Science Selective to JR Grainless pellets but I hit a snag, the guinea pig I really wanted to change to them isn't keen on them :doh: but all the others are fine with them. I was hoping to change them because Jericho might be a bladder piggie and I wanted to cut his calcium intake down, but no point if Jericho doesn't like them :/ The other low in calcium ones are a bit pricey for me.

Aww that's just typical isn't it! Yeah wish Oxbow was a bit cheaper/easier to get hold of in the UK.

maybe contact them and ask what grass it is. because i'm sure it used to say alfalfa so it's possible they may have changed them :)

Is that for Excel Kerrie? I swear it used to say Grass as the first ingredient (or it used to when I used to work in a pet shop a few years ago!) That's so annoying, I may use science selective than as an alternative for now if I've been givin alfalfa all this time lol

Ahh ok thank you, I think I'll email them and ask what grass, it would be useful to know :)
 
To be honest, your definition of "expensive" should be "cheap" in my book, since we all need to import (In the case of Oxbow!), your Burgess must be wayyy cheaper! :(

A bag of Burgess cost SGD 20 here, and the small bag of Adult Oxbow Guinea Pig pellets (2.3kg) is SGD 18 here, with the 4.5kg ones at SGD 27.

And anyway, not going to risk giving my piggies those Burgess again, I've dumped my bag.

Well for me to get a 4.5kg of Oxbow it would be about £20 but for 4kg or Burgess it's only £10.
Think I'll try science selective or Harringtons as they are similar price to Burgess :)
