Hi everybody!

We went to the vet yesterday and he examined Sergio focusing more on his swollen eye... Just by looking at it and also knowing that he's lost a lot of weight recently, he decided that it's possible that Sergio has a tumor behind his eye, but he said that there is no way we can be sure about that since there is no available ct scan for pets in Thessaloniki where I live...
However, by taking a closer look at the eye, he noticed that there was an ulcer there.. So, he claimed that since we can't do anything if it's a tumor anyway, we'll try to calm the eye down with Dispersadron eye drops (every 12 hours), but being extremely careful since this treatment might affect the ulcer in a bad way.. He also suggested 25ml of Vitakraft Nager-Elixier per day (I syringe-feed him with this one) and 25ml of Vitakraft Vitamin C per day (in the water).

Since we started this treatment Sergio is sooo much better! He is happy, alert, running around and squicking, gnawing on his cage bars, eating like tones of hay and parsley and he's even gained 30grams in 2 days! His eye looks better as well.. No more tears and I think that the swelling has subsided a little too..

Should all these changes give me hope that it's not a tumor? Or shouldn't I start pop-corning yet?

I am so sorry for the long post.. I just couldn't help it...:(

Dispersadrone contains chloramphenicol antibioitic which is fine for guineas but it also contains a potent steroid dexamethasone which is not often used for this type of condition in piggies as it is quite harsh and can suppress the imune system....which is porbably why you have been warned to use it carefully. My exotics vet will not use steroids in piggies except as a last resort, preferring instead to use a non-steroidal anti infalmmatory such as metacam.

If you have concerns about using the disperadrone, or it doesnt; seem to be working, then Fucithalmic eye drops are frequently used to treat piggies with scratched or ulcerated eyes (or just chloramphenicol eyedrops without the steroid. If your piggie is still in pain, metacam is a pain reliever as well as an anti-inflammatory.

At the moment the only real indicator to suggest a possible tumour would be the weight loss now that the ulcer has been discovered. However a piggie in pain with an ulcerated eye can stop eating/reduce their food intake and lose weight. It's good that you;re syringe feeding him but i would suggest you may need to feed him more than 25ml daily (try also mushed up pellets) in order to get his weight back on.

Hopefully his ulcer will clear up, he will put his weight back on and you (and Sergio) will have no further worries

x

Thanks for your advice so much! I'll keep in touch with the vet and I'll tell him about all this! I had no clue! Fortunately, Sergio hasn't been in pain at all.. Even when he was moody, he never gave me this impression..

I just believe that if it really was a tumor, he would be deteriorating day after day instead of getting better and better.. So I can still be smiling I guess... :)
