I went into a Just for Pets this afternoon to pick up a couple of things for the piggies. While I was in there I couldn't resist going to look at the guinea pigs they had. They were 2 boars that looked around 6 months old (ish). There was a couple with a young child looking at them and (I have no idea why) they asked me if they were both boys in there. I said they should be and she then went on to ask about cages etc.
I pointed to the cage size that they would need, told them the size they get when fully grown and even told them that there is a chance that 2 boars can fight when they reach the hormonal stages. She then asked about female piggies, and I told her that if she got female guinea pigs from a pet shop, that they could potentially be pregnant. This put the guy right off buying them. I think that she really wanted them, and their child definately did, so I told them all about rescues and that any boars they would get from a rescue would be bonded so there would be a slim chance of them falling out, and if they got females they would definatly not be pregnant. She also asked if she could get just one, and I told her she could but they are much happier in pairs as they are herd animals, but boars can only usually be kept in pairs. The lady didn't look to happy that I kind of made the guy change his mind, but at the same time I think she was greatful that I explained stuff to her and I answered her questions (even if it wasn't what she wanted to hear).
I think they were maybe limited with space too, because when she asked about cage size and I pointed to the cage size (min.) that she'd need for 2 piggies and said that bigger is better and that RSPCA minimum for 2 piggies is 4'x2' he kind of looked at her and shook his head.
I have no idea whether they bought the guinea pigs, and I kind of feel bad for the piggies being stuck in there, but at the same time, at least that couple now know a bit more about piggies, and if they do choose to get any, then they've got that little bit of knowledge to help them a little bit.
Well I thought I did quite well
I know there is a lot of posts like this, but I just thought I'd share
P.S. Sorry for the really long post.
