I travelled 120 mile round trip today to visit Simon Maddock in Northampton. I wanted him to look at my oldest boar Jack, who has been losing weight and seen to be struggling to eat at times. I took him to my local vet but they couldn’t find anything and suggested I keep an eye on him. I looked through the forum threads to see if anyone else had had teeth problems and saw good things about Simon so decided to take Jack there. Initial exam showed he was in good health, then Simon took him off to fit the gag so that he could look at his back teeth. The left side of his mouth is fine, but the right not so good. The front molar was pinning his tongue and curving into his gum whilst the third molar was flaring out and had gouged a hole in Jacks cheek. Simon filed his teeth and Jack is now also on painkiller/anti-inflammatory drugs. He has to go back in two weeks to get things checked out as there is also some swelling in the roots of the top teeth on the right side - hopefully it won’t develop into an abscess. I just wanted to say it was worth the journey and cost to get the best treatment for Jack without having to be put under GA, as I know older pigs can struggle to recover from GA. I would recommend anyone with a similar problem to make the journey if you can - Simon is a great vet and very knowledgeable about guinea pig dental problems. And thanks to the forum, it’s a great place to get good advice.

simon is my local vet. Great to hear you now know the problem with your pig. Nottingham is quite a way but its an easy drive if you get a good run on the m1👍

I have driven to the cat and rabbit clinic twice in the past and wouldn't ever hesitate to do it again if I suspected a dental problem

Sounds well worth the time and effort. Jack is a lucky piggy that he lives with such a devoted slave. I hope that he does well following his dental treatment.

I did have a straight run there thankfully - only too an hour and fifteen minutes at a ateady pace. Coming back was a bit more of a mare but it was approaching rush hour! Well worth it though for the peace of mind!

Yep I agree with you, we travelled from Cornwall this year 6.5 hours each way plus hotel for night to see Simon with our Ted. He sorted his teeth within 10 minutes, spike on left side, after all the problems we had with local vets previously, they made him worse. Recommend to anyone with pigs with dental problems, really, it’s worth the travel and they settle down in car after half an hour and sleep most of the way!

Hope Jack gets his teeth sorted, poor boy xx

Simon is amazing and the reason that TEAS exists. We couldn't do what we do, without Simon and Kim. What time were you there yesterday? I was there yesterday afternoon with four piggies xx
I was first in at 3.30 and didn’t see any other pigs so we probably missed you! You are so lucky to have such a great vet!

Healing vibes to Jack. Hope he makes a full recovery. x
