Mentioned on the guinea pig facebook group ;)

"Guinea Pig Ice Lollies - a *treat* to keep your guinea pigs cool this summer. Take some veg (not the type to wilt!) and/or some fruit (not too much!) such as cucumber, (gutted/seedless) baby tomatoes, bell pepper, or melon. Put in water and leave to freeze - remember to ensure it has melted just enough *BEFORE* giving it to your guinea pig as we don't want tongues stuck to ice! This does include sugary foods though, so watch the portions!"
 
Oh dear! They have just posted this:

"The ice lolly idea has been removed - pending further research into the issue of pigs tolerance of frozen foods. Whilst a very reliable source gave us the idea - there is now conflicting evidence that this is *not* in fact a good idea. We will get back to you :)"

What do you guys think about the use of frozen foods and piggies?

I'd be too worried about my lot's tongues.. and them getting brain freezes haha. Crushed ice in water bottles is one thing.. but actually putting ice inside their hutches is another.
 
I think it's the food bit; piggies aren't supposed to eat any food that's frozen, if taken from the fridge it should be brought to room temp first ideally, or wash in warmish water. They can have ice cubes in their water though :)
 
my poor jinnywigs were out in the pen earlier, zonked out with it being so warm, the pen was in the shade but it was still too hot. this is a lovely idea, and i'm putting a piggy lolly in my freezer ready for tommorow :) thank you x
 
Hi jinniwig, just found on the guinea care page you should never give them veg from the freezer, so probably not ones in lollies either, sorry :(
 
Jinnywig! Did you see the update? It's now been said that it's not good for the piggies! Sorry for the confusion :{

That wasn't what we meant by the update - we said we were looking into it further.

The Guinea Pig Helpline has now helped to clarify things (Laura on here I believe). As we actually got the idea from a very old post on here, and have been doing it since. And it seems they are fine as piggies are not guzzling it down - which would explain why no-one has previously had problems with the lollies.
 
When I didn't know anything about Guinea Pig's, I always wanted to pour orange juice or apple juice in a icecube template and then give them the pigs. I dunno' if this would be possible now, because I've heard you can give pigs orange juice in the bottle? Wouldn't do it personally.

I have wrapped the blue picnic cooler thing's in fleece for them to lay on and stay cool as they are in my kitchen i can keep an eye on them it's only temporary i am getting some panda pop bottle's and will freeze them instead but the piggies are laying on them tho i will have to take them out tonight incase they get peckish love the idea of ice in the water bottle's tho

Thanks for clearing it up Char-x. I just kind of felt responsible for posting it on here and didn't want to make any piggies poorly! Sorry again for all the confusion! mallethead
 
i use small coke or such bottles frozen and then a sock wrapped over them..... and also floor tiles, i have two different sizes and i find they're great too :)
 
A nice large rounded stone from the beach :(|)

sterilised in milton overnight of course and rinsed, dried then give to pigs

My girls lay on the stone to keep cool

I have thought about putting a stone tile in cage but maybe sharpe edges :a19:

So nice rounded stone is great cos it stays cool always :(|)

Diet wise cool water melon, cucumber

yep :) they are really good, although a while back i did read about a piggy that hurt its leg when it slipped on it. maybe cover with some material just in case? I have one with no problems though x

Lol I thought it would be a silly question, but I was wondering if maybe they'd hurt themselves. I think I'll get one and try it xox
