My 4.5 year old sow has a history of blood in urine, visible and bright red, 3 episodes a month or so apart, which cleared up with loxicom, zantac (i always use this along with loxicom as a gut protectant), and a week to ten days of septrin. She has just had a fourth episode with no visible blood this time, but pain when urinating/pooing- this is a new symptom. She has just finished a week of the meds above, but i reduced her loxicom slowly- and the squealing has returned.

She is booked in tomorrow at 11am for an xray to check for stones- and i wonder if u could all wish with me that there is none! I really am praying for a IC diagnosis so i can just add cystease and dont need to worry about surgery- she was recently spayed (nearly 2 months ago) so would rather avoid this. shes already on the IC diet vegs, low-medium calcium level pellets and ony timothy hay.. This has eased her symptoms previously but isnt enough to keep it at bay.

Heres hoping!

Heres my beautiful girl :)

Hugs and vibes on their way. I also had a piggy with persistent urine trouble, blood and some pain, and it's so upsetting when it keeps coming back.

Keeping everything crossed. Had to do the same with my Amy on Saturday. No stones luckily.

@GPTV i saw your comment on another post about barley water.. Can u give me info on that please? Like how to make and how much to give etc. my girl is having her xray for stones as we speak but I'm hoping its just IC! Thank you x

So just back from the vets, crunchie has no stones in her bladder YAYYY! The bladder doesnt look inflammed but she has been on loxicom. The vet thinks its a persistant infection so has given me another 2 weeks of septrin and some oxbow urinary support tabs. Urine had no blood or crystals. All good :) thanks everyone xx

I used it a long time ago. If I remember rightly I made about a small cupful daily. I'll try &dig out the recipe later. Basically just throw some water on top of pearl barley (used in stews etc) ,boil it up &leave to simmer for about 10mins I think.
You can feed them the mush &syringe feed the liquid.
Its a bit time consuming &a batch lasts about 24hrs in the fridge.

I'm pretty sure it was a peter guerney, piggy potions recipe.

I think it helps to line the bladder wall &generally keeps them well hydrated to flush through the bladder I'm sure there's something else but it escapes me at the moment.

Congratulations on a good result at the vets

Hmm can't find the book here for a mo. Will look down parents tomorrow to see if I left it there. Xx

Just fill half a cup of Barley, fill a pot with 3 times the amount of water. Boil for 35 mins -45 minutes or until Gloupy looking add more water if necessary as the water will evaporate well boiling. sieve barley to separate from gloup into a bowl. Leave to cool and syringe fluid mine like it Luke warm and syringe to guinea pig :).

Thank you both @GPTV @flintstones i will give it a try! May seem self explanatory "barley water", but my heads totally fried with all the girls meds/treatments at the moment so i can never be too careful! Thanks again x

Found book agree with @flintstones. Says 1part pearl barley to 8parts water.
Add the mush to their favourite veg &liquidize to thick soup consistency. Put in dish or syringe feed .
1ml of honey can be added. Too, although think its just to make more tasty. night&morning for 3-4 days days for a noticeable difference.
Xx
From piggy potions. Peter gurney. Good luck :-D
