tomorrow mallow will be spayed for problems with her ovaries. Shes had 2 absolute hellish 7 day long seasons, suspicious tissue on both ovaries and now enlarged/easily palpable ovaries. In theory she is low risk as is still 100% healthy and only 17months old.. But ofcourse i still worry!

Been living on an extremely low budget lately as had alot of vet bills/monthly prescriptions for fudge and now a second surgery in 6 months. Looking over my statements, iv spent £3,000 in vet bills since fudges initial investigations for heart failure 10 months ago.. And never mind the amount i spend on food/veg/hay/toys/vetbed/new c&c set up.. And i wonder why I'm so skint!

Please keep mallow in your thoughts tomorrow! She goes in at 12 and will be operated on at 1.30 x

I can completely relate to the cost if vet bills. I've spent close to £800 since the start of March on vet bills alone, and I've had to take a lot of time off work with Toast not eating so I'll be living off air for a bit :P

Mallow's in a really good position for the surgery, like you said she's healthy and young so try not to worry too much

Good luck beautiful Mallow. My Connie is also going in for oophorectomy tomorrow. We can have an anxious wait together

What is connie having? Good luck vibes for her too! Xx

Thanks everyone! Just cleaned the hospital cage just incase its needed, and packed mallows bag for tomorrow .. Tried my very best to cram it all into one bag for life, as 2 bags would make me look mental :D

Weve got sandwhich bags containing oxbow, burgess and science select pellets, larger freezer bags of dandelion forage, meadow hay, timothy hay, herb forage, oat hay.. A bag of critical care, snugglesafe, strawberry bed, timothy and herb stickle sticks, avipro plus, 2 blankets, 2 puppy pads, a bowl and a water bottle... And will make her salad tomorrow before she goes.

Just realised I'm probably already going to look mental :mal::whistle:

Fingers &paws all tightly crossed here for mallow &Connie. @VickiA

Speedy recovery to two lovely ladies ...
Speedy recovery to the wallets too! Love the girls &I. Xx

Thats mallow dropped off for her spay, she'll be put under within the hour.

U heard about connie yet @VickiA ?

Thinking of the girls in surgery today, and hoping everyone is home quickly with no complications.
Adelle - did you have a trailer attached to the car for all of Mallows luggage? Your packing list did make me smile

Hi @Adelle , yes, I had a call about an hour ago -Connie was under anaesthetic and the vet was offering to remove an additional "lump" so as to spare her a second procedure at a later date. Apparently the spay had gone well, but one of her cystic ovaries was very large, so I'm hoping she will feel much better once she recovers from the procedure.
Any news on Mallow?

Good need for connie, at least that ovary and that lump is out now!

Vet called back, mallow sailed her surgery and acting like nothings happened, she ate cucumber as soon as she was awake enough. One of her ovaries was bigger than the other, mishapen and a funny colour so something was definately brewing there resulting in her hormones going crazy. Iv to pick her up in an hour (4 hours all in shes been away, not long at all!)

Now for a question for anyone that can answer! The vet has prescried dog metacalm (i use cat but she is used to dosing dog one for gps meaning il have accurate pain relief dosages) and baytril.. I asked if this was common procedure as crunchie didnt get any but ended up with a wound infection to got a week of septrin which cleared it.. She said she doesnt for dogs n cats post neuter but does gps because their wound is so close to the floor. I explaied I'm not keen on baytril due to the bloat in crunchie and horrendous diarrohea and innapetance from fudge when used it in the past, and if she feels it is necessary then could i have septrin instead.. She says she doesnt like lrescribing septrin when there is no known infection or a first hand anti b option so suggested i take the baytril home but only administer if her wound starts to look infected.

Does this sound like a good plan or am i better sticking to her usual practice and administering it post op for a course? My worry is she goes off her food, and i wont know if its baytril or pain related.

But good news for mallow anyway :-)

Metacam for dogs works better for guinea pigs. Because of the higher metabolism, the dosage for guinea pigs is higher than a comparable dose for dogs. ;)

Using baytril is a bit of a toss up in your case considering the bad reaction. \

As Mallow is doing so well, you can consider risking it without antibiotic and rather opting for a stronger AB if really needed, but keep a close eye on her weight/appetite (the onset of infection is often causing loss of apptite) and how the wound looks. Just make sure that she gets seen asap as soon as there are signs of an infection.

It was fudge and crunchie that reacted to it badly, for that reason iv never ised it on mallow, only septrin. Hmmm I'm torn!

If Mallow has not had a bad reaction to baytril, I would be inclined to give it a go if it was one mine, but stop the moment she loses her appetite. But I have been lucky in that none of mine has ever had more than some softish poo and a slightly diminished appetite at the worst in reaction to baytril.
