After losing 3 pigs last week, we really needed some good news.
As some may know, two of the pigs we lost, Rasher (neutered) and Caramel, were Jellybean's mum and dad who she lived with until they passed away from unknown causes. They vet advised us to keep her in quarantine for a week, which we did (as they couldn't rule out something contagious). My concern was that when I tried to move her to a new group in the past, either she was picked on by the other sows, or she picked on the other sows.
When Pinky the boar arrived (a pink and white teddy/ beabie-baby lol), she had him for company but it's not the same as living with other real pigs. So unless I managed to get one of my herds to accept her, I was planning to get a neutered boar... she loves boars, its just the sows she never got on with.
On the 17th, Coconut came home from the vet after staying from the prev Friday. In an attempt to avoid future problems, I took out two of his and Cinnamon's daughters: Marble who was stealing his food and Biscuit who is her partner in crime and swapped them with Pancake's wives.
Well, yesterday, Jelly's quarantine was up and she is still fine. Good weight, clear nose, eyes, ears, nice coat, nails and teeth fine, breathing fine, scoffing any and all food, playing etc. I originally put her in with my biggest herd: Coconut, Cinnamon, Toffee, Phantom and Baby but they all started attacking her and it was getting to the point they were going to start drawing blood so I took her back out, put Biscuit back in with the herd and Jellybean then went into her brother Pancake's and Marble's cage.
Pancake (neutered) is a very kind natured young pig but he won't be bullied and Jellybelly and Marble seem to be getting on fine so far. So, hopefully, they can stay like this.
If they end up fighting too, I only have one other place she can go... Mocha (AKA Bully Pig) and Wiiiiieek's (neutered) cage. Mocha has never, ever gotten on with other sows. If you put her even near any, she will chatter and strut and lunge etc and WILL draw blood readily. Maybe she will like Jellybean but I doubt it.
I'm hoping these set ups can stay as they are now, otherwise I still may need to get a boar for Jellybean. Let's hope they continue to get along.
Anyway, I wanted to say thank you to all who posted kind thoughts and offered their support and sympathies over the past week...
