So in 2020 we went down from three pigs to one with our matriarch leaving us just before Christmas. Hardly perfect timing for Harvey to be alone but after almost a whole month by himself we've managed to sneak out during lockdown and find Harvey a new girlfriend! She is from a local rescue to us Avalon GPR and only 18months ish old. I little bit younger than we would have probably liked but in our situation beggars can't be choosers. It's still early days but the two of them seem very polite to each other. Lots of sniffing and polite getting to know you behaviours so hopefully girlfriend will become wife pretty soon. I think she might be the boss of the two though as there has been a few polite "go away" type snaps from her and a few kicks in the face when she's got fed up with the bum sniffing. :))

Her story is pretty sad. Apparently she was rescued off people who didn't really know what they were doing or really care. She was alone in a tiny cage and didn't even have a name! She was so stressed she's been over grooming her legs which we'll keep an eye on in case it's something more sinister! She does still seem to be doing a lot of grooming and scratching so I assume it is stress. Harvey is very excited he has a new girlfriend and we've often been hearing him make friendly chortling noises as he goes over to check on her in her safe hiding place and a few baby popcorns even after she tells him off.

Personally I think she's beautiful! (Yeah I'm biased). She's a white crested guinea with a black spot over her eye which I think are ruby eyes. She will be my first crested piggy since my first guinea pig as a child (well one of a pair). We've not quite settled on a name yet as she's very shy (understandable if she's been so stressed she's over groomed herself), but we are leaning towards the name Petal. :D

When she got adventurous because Harvey stole her veg and ran off with it.

Welcome to the family sweet little girl.

Poor girl what a bad life she had before. Now she won't believe what a lovely home she has and a potential husboar too !

Aw she’s beautiful, congrats to you and Harvey! Poor little girly, how could she not even have a name! :yikes: Petal’s lovely if that’s what you decide on :) Bet she’s in heaven now bless her!
My Jasper had quite barbered front legs when he came in September but within a few weeks the hair (well fuzz!) started growing back so hopefully it’ll be the same for the gorgeous girly now she’s in a brilliant home and a million times happier I’m sure! x

Oh this is comforting! We're trying to leave her as much as possible but today I took her out to weigh her because she's so nervous she's not eating much. She's still adolescent by the looks of her but she came in at a very petite 767g. So we've put the hay tray back in filled it to over flowing with hay and popped her in it. This way at least she can eat her hiding place.

Unfortunately it seems to have spooked her a bit. :( She was trying to hide while in my hands. Poor little pudding! So the previous owners who bought a pig despite not really wanting one have really done a number on her. I think convincing her we're friends is going to take a good few weeks. And sadly better photos of her will take a while. This is where I wish we had another pig. Safety in numbers afterall.

Aw bless her poor little lady, I can totally imagine as Cleo (Jasper’s new wife) is 4 months old and been here 9 weeks, still terrified at times and in hiding a lot even with Jasper around! I can’t really talk when she’s around or she hides, definitely has her good and bad days! I tend to put hay in all the beds so if she is too scared when I’m around at least she’s got something to nibble!
How sad, you do wonder why people bother! 😡Cleo was originally from a breeder who obviously hadn’t handled her at all and she was so scared when she came, would try and jump out of hands (from a height! :yikes:) and I’ve had quite a few hard bites! But she’s improving!
Hopefully Harvey will give her a bit of confidence like Jasper’s doing with Cleo! 🤞🤞

I'm sure once she realises she's safe, comfortable, has plenty of food and more importantly is wanted and loved she will blossom. It's taken Patsy since September until now to start to feel settled and Patsy was well loved and looked after in her previous home. Patience is what is needed and taking things at your piggy's pace. It's awful how some people treat animals. Poor little girly!

How lovely that Harvey has company. She is beautiful.
I am making an assumption (that may be wrong) that she wasn’t vet checked by Avalon before she was re-homed to you. That being the case, I would definitely get her vet checked as soon as possible if she is biting and scratching just to be on the safe side.

The vet check is on the to do list. If I'm honest I stupidly didn't ask. I've noticed this morning a bit of flaky skin with hair still attached so she obviously has a bit of a skin problem. The rescue had given her some ivermectin before we arrived yesterday so hopefully if its a mites infection the ivermectin will help.

Omgoodness! Sound like that breeder might have been a breeder for the money rather than the love of it. Poor little baby.

I’d definitely recommend a vet check too! Cleo was also crawling with lice a week after she arrived (was booked for a check at Cat&Rabbit for her wonky feet the week after but had to rush her to local vets as they were everywhere!) and I had to treat all four of my piglets (3 treatments with ivermectin, 2 weeks apart)! Yes the breeder was definitely all about the pennies! Thankfully the pet shop I took her on from were very caring people. (Here’s her original thread in case you wanted a read)
Webbed back toes

Hope her vet check goes well :)

Aw so glad Harvey’s got a new girlfriend, she’s very pretty, she looks a little like our new boy Hector who we will be bonding with Ginger and Posh after losing Ted just before Christmas

Yes there seem to be lots of crested piggies joining the forum atm!

Poor little girl.
Hope there’s nothing serious wrong with her.
It took Phoebe a few months to stop running away and hiding every time I came near.
If I had to take her out I did so in her snuggle pouch so she felt safe.
She’s now a very confident piggy.
As already said, it can take time and patience but you will bring her round.
