Ive spoken to a rodentoligist (thanks starshine) and he is brilliant. We had a chat on the phone about Lincoln and me being told he was diabetic last night at the vets. He really belives that Lincoln isnt and that sugar levels in the blood of guinea pigs are always higher than normal.
I told him Lincolns symtoms and his said his boars do exactly the same in Winter. He just thinks I'm seeing normal behaviour. Ive got to weigh Lincoln tonight and ring him back tomorrow night to have another chat to see how to go forward.
I'm very happy and optomistic now:)

its amazing how one time, you think everything's at its lowest ebb, then one bit of information makes everything bareable. I'm so pleased for you both xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

awww thats great news if that is the case! Fingers crossed for you both x

I was thinking that I would hate to give injections to any of my lot but if it had to be done then it had to be done!

Brilliant news! Also the higher than average sugar levels may have happened if he had fruit? Perhaps it would be worthwhile doing the test when he hasn't had veggies? Not sure if thats right but like with us we have to fast before having tests. Harder for piggys I know as they must eat.

Hope things turn out ok. :)

That's absolutely fantastic news Chez - I'm really happy for you and Lincoln.:)

It did make me wonder how the vet can just diagnose diabetes like that off one test - it doesn't seem right to me. My oldest sister was diagnosed with diabetes about 5 years ago and she had had no symptoms whatsoever and they only found out she had it in hospital when she was in to have her gall bladder out. They tested her blood sugar and it was really high - think she said 18.9. :o Goodness knows how long she had had it before. She isn't on injections at all and it was just controlled by diet at first but my sister just couldn't stay away from foods she wasn't meant to eat rolleyes so she now has tablets but not injections. When you think a piggy only lives a few years it makes you wonder whether diabetes would affect it so much and whether the injections would do more harm than good cos you can't really test their blood sugars can you?:{

This rodentologist sounds like he really knows what he's talking about.:)

Thats such great news! I did think that might be what Paul said but I didn't want to self diagnose as I am by no means an expert! As I said in my PM there is nothing this guy doesn't know about piggies so hopefully it is onwards and upwards for Lincoln from now on!

I cant thank you enough starshine i really cant! I was so low when i found out about Lincoln and i feel so much better now. I spoke to him again tonight and his gave me someone elses number to see where to go from here but his very happy with what I'm feeding him and Lincolns weight etc and really belives his fine. i couldnt be happier :)
